uMatrix's official website's first words are "definitely for advanced users". I can't recommend something like that on my site.

Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin together are extremely easy to use and block trackers/cookies, they run absolutely fine on my cheap laptop.

Could you point me to some information about why DDG is "compromised"?

Qwant is already on there, just scroll the page down a bit.

uMatrix's page says it's for advanced users.

Startpage is run by very odd people who think RFID tags are a satanic prophecy. I've posted about them before, and I'm not recommending them to anyone.

AFAIK Chromium-based browsers are compromised due to their Google-based origins, so I hesitate to recommend them.

Switching.social is intended for non-technical people who want easy-to-use, easy-to-install, easy-to-maintain apps and sites.

I think the options you're suggesting are meant for more technically aware people?

So, I've imported ~25Gb of music from the Free Music Archive on https://open.audio using this method.

It worked beautifully, and it's now available for the whole #Funkwhale federation. Follow this library from your Funkwhale instance and you'll have access to it:

    https://open.audio/federation/music/libraries/ce1fb6d4-fae6-464a-a34a-bdd46209ee82

Absolutely, it's totally down to the organisers.

It's like ebay, some sellers might be flaky while others are reliable, it works on a system of trusting the specific people you're dealing with rather than the whole platform itself.

Because of its "real world" basis, use of MeetUp (and indeed GetTogether) really depends on your area.

Where I live it's very frequently used, but in other areas it might not be used at all. Unlike other social media etc, the network effect on a real life meeting system is very local to a particular physical area.

I've posted before why GetTogether would really suit federation because of this ๐Ÿ‘

    Hey new people on Mastodon!

For privacy reasons there's no automated "people to follow" suggestions on here.

However, there is an unofficial community site called #Trunk which is an opt-in list of people who are looking for followers, organised by topic:

    https://communitywiki.org/trunk/

Scroll down to find people to follow, or read the instructions at the top if you want to be added to a list.

For example, here's the list for "Science Fiction":

If you're interested in creating 2D animation, you might want to take a look at the short film "Hero":

There's a brief set of behind-the-scenes clips at the end of the short to illustrate how it was made.

"Hero" was created on Grease Pencil, a set of 2D graphics tools in the open source graphics suite Blender.

#CreativeCommons (CC) is a way to let people share your work without giving up all your rights.

For example, many bands use it to let fans legally share their music non-commercially, while still being able to charge companies for commercial use.

It's really easy to add a CC licence, just pick the one you want from the official site and add it to your work:

    https://creativecommons.org/

You can add CC licences to almost anything, including text, music, video etc.

#CitizensInititives / #GovernmentPetitions force governments to respond to political issues.

Switching.social recommends using CIs instead of commercial petition sites such as change.org.

You can find a list of CIs here:

    https://switching.social/ethical-alternatives-to-change-org/

In some countries, gathering enough signatures on a CI automatically triggers a debate in parliament, which can potentially lead to changes in law. For example, same-sex marriage in Finland was legalised through a CI.
