The Guardian is starting a new regular column by an anonymous worker in an Amazon warehouse:

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/nov/21/our-new-column-from-inside-amazon-they-treat-us-as-disposable

"Through the use of digital trackers, our workday is managed down to the second, with each task timed based on a rate set by managers who push us ever faster. ...we are essentially extensions of the machine."

"...management doesn’t regard us as crucial contributors to its success. In reality, they treat us like disposable parts."

    • Anfora

#Anfora is an open source online photo album, an ethical alternative to Instagram.

It's currently under development, you can follow the latest updates at:

    @anfora

If you're a developer, you can help out at:

    https://github.com/anforaProject/anfora/

Anfora will use the ActivityPub standard to form a decentralised network of independent sites.

As AP is the same standard used by Mastodon, Pixelfed, Pleroma etc you will be able to follow Anfora accounts from these sites too.

#ActivityPubForWordPress are plugins for WordPress sites that add support for the ActivityPub standard.

This means people can follow the WordPress site from ActivityPub-powered services such as Mastodon etc.

There are a couple of such plugins right now:

This may not be quite what you have in mind, but another option is Friendica, which lets you follow Mastodon users and RSS feeds through the same stream.

You add RSS feeds to Friendica the same way you add friends, and they are displayed the same way too, RSS posts can be liked and shared. It's a sort of merger of RSS and the Fediverse.

Should add that, as the article itself says, he had a very positive influence on the world in other ways.

I guess money and family connections change the way people see certain things, make them blind to their bad effects.

If you have no verification *at all*, then spoofing becomes much easier and anonymous.

With verification, spoofer has to pay for each spoofed account, and leaves a paper trail incl. name and address. That's a lot of hassle and makes spoofers traceable.

Also, I think you're associating verification with celebrities/brands because that's how Twitter does things. This isn't like Twitter at all, this is levelling the playing field so it's open to everyone.

Well, my browser (Firefox) resolves that address as "xn-switching-ich.social", so if people wanted to be sure they could click on a link to see if the address changes.

They might not bother doing that, but then they might not bother doing that with a banking URL or something else with highly confidential information. There are more dangerous scenarios to worry about if web browsers allow foreign alphabet addresses by default without warning.

    1. Establish an official website which people know is yours

    2. Add a link to your official website from your Mastodon profile

    3. Edit your Mastodon profile and go to the section on links, paste the HTML ownership code into the front page of your website

    4. Save your Mastodon profile, your instance will check that the ownership code is present on your website. If it is, you get a green tick next to the link.

    5. Congratulations, you're verified!

It's aimed at people who have no prior knowledge. If you know someone who is confused by how a decentralised platform works (for example Mastodon compared to Twitter), you might want to send them this link.

I've tried to explain federation in simple terms here:

    https://switching.social/federated-sites/

but if you want a tl/dr then I'd say this:

If your phone company screws up, you can switch providers, and you can still call your friends because all phone companies are part of the single public phone network.

Federated social networks work the same way.

Don't let Google News decide which stories you see, control your own news with RSS:

As predicted by many commentators, #CambridgeAnalytica is going to escape punishment because all the people involved simply formed a new (but legally separate) company:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-24/-houdini-act-looms-at-cambridge-analytica-as-everyone-vanishes

By going after companies and not people, it is very difficult to enforce privacy laws.

This is a familiar pattern that commercial con artists use: run up liabilities with one company, then transfer assets to a new company. If they get caught, they simply do it again, and it's legal.
