Maybe it's time that professional journalists in Aotearoa (NZ) started doing some targeted surveillance of privately-owned #SecretPolice forces like Thompson & Clark:
    https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/27-04-2018/why-have-thompson-clark-been-allowed-to-keep-spying-on-us-in-your-name/

This could also include #WilsonSecurity (who run both parking buildings and refugee camps), the various ex-cop run drug-testing and "education" companies like #MethCon and so on?

By Alex Casey and Hayden Donnell from The Spinoff
On Monday a new North & South came out, with a story as old as time: 'what the hell is wrong with millennials'? Two millennials had a read and What They Found Inside Will Shock You. The latest issue of North & South magazine has done the unthinkable, and found a non-millennial to shine a

Hey #Occupy veterans, what do you reckon of the idea of running a one month, live-in activism training camp? The pitch would be to give people a stable place to live and regular meals for a month, and run daily workshops, peer-to-peer support training, and group discussions. The goal would be to help people who lack housing security to advocate for themselves and each other, and to give them the contacts and the confidence to get more involved in other kinds of activism, especially occupations.

@Wolf480pl when #NZ was proposing to bring in proportional representation, there was a lot of concern that replacing "tick a box" with "put numbers in a bunch of boxes" would confuse people, and maybe even put them off voting at all. "Tick two boxes" was held to be an easier transition. I don't think this theory has panned out, because to under the two votes, you have to understand "party list MPs", "overhang seats", the 5% threshold for representation, the "coattail rule" exception to it etc

@xurizaemon doesn't that mean that each #fediverse app would have to implement this though? Wouldn't it be better for everyone if we could convince Maciej to implement AP (or relevants bits thereof) so that any and all fediverse apps can be used in place of the birdsite?

@Kaffe Kea are awesome! They will tear apart literally anything! Fortunately they are the world's only alpine parrot, so they mainly tear apart stuff belonging to skiers, snowboarders, and mountaineers ;-) However their lowland cousins the Kaka are making a comeback in many areas, thanks to fenced sanctuaries where they can safely breed. They too like to tear things apart ...

The alcohol and tobacco lobby are at it again, with a bunch of unreferenced claims, delivered via the editorial in a glossy magazine:
    https://www.noted.co.nz/currently/social-issues/cannabis-referendum-nz-avoid-reefer-madness/

    Example:
    > Rates for use by all people aged 12 and over are nearly twice as high as in non-legal states. Underaged users – those 12 to 17 – are now nearly 50% more likely to have consumed cannabis in the previous month, according to the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?

Since #Linux has adopted the penguin as its logo, it would be great to see the #LinuxFoundation donating to some organizations that are helping to save threatened penguin species like the Hoihi, or Yellow Eyed Penguin. Maybe the #GNUProject could contribute something to wildlife conversation on the African Savannah, where the real Gnu live? #NoSoftwareFreedomOnADeadPlanet

Does anyone know of a data visualization tool into which I could enter a dataset about a piece of government spending, and have it visualized as a flow chart showing what the entity that received the bulk funding did with. Who received funds from the entity that received it from the government? Who did they pay it out to, and so on. Ideally in a way that an investigative journalist could add to the dataset over time, as they research something.

@kensanata Of the 6 winners, 3 still answer to the URL published in the #Wired article (#GrowStuff.org, #ParentInterviews.co.nz and #BoardGameScores.com). #FoodByPeople redirects to #BakerCalc.com so maybe a pivot or an acquisition? A web search turned up nothing for "simple cyber security" except a LinkedIn profile indicating Nik White is now does devOps for #BioTRUSTNutrition (pill company?). No results at all for "sailor forcasts". 4/6 is a better success ratio than most startup incubators.
