    > It makes me think that making FOSS applications tailored for non-tinkerers' needs would require a different (not better!) development model and set of incentives, one that may turn out to be unsuitable for tinkerers.

Congratulations! You just invented open source! ;-P

The vision of having every computer user or most computer users upgraded to programmers and creators has turned out a harder nut to crack than many of us thought back in the 80s.

Of course it doesn't help that mass-produced devices have been forces in the exact opposite direction, because their manufacturers had other problems they wanted to solve.

We anticipated then that #ActivityPub would one day allow federated search among MediaGoblin instances (still waiting for that BTW ;) but we never imagined a new package doing that *and* using #WebTorrent to allow users help instances stream videos, as they watch. This is a good example of why I'm so hopeful about the future and why fatalistic predictions are so often wrong. There's just so much that can't be predicted, no matter how much you know about the present state of a system #ChaosTheory

It's hard to believe that in only two years we've gone from scratching our heads over #GoblinRefuge.com becoming a semi-centralized supernode of #MediaGoblin hosting:
    https://trisquel.info/en/forum/small-issue-goblinrefuge

... to a thriving federated network of #PeerTube sites:

@pinkprius the one form of government regulation no right-wing "libertarian" ever sees as a problem is government enforcement of property claims. In fact, they essentially think the only legitimate function of government is to run a protection racket on behalf of the rentier class. #AdamSmith would be turning in his grave.

@riking if they are acting as common carriers, they ought to be regulated as common carriers. What I'm arguing is that it ought to be illegal to excuse some users or their content on the basis of "free speech", while still reserving the right operate a blocklist, ban certain users, or moderate posts. If they want the disclaimer of being a common carrier, they don't get any of the discretionary powers of publishers. Does that address your concern?

Along similar lines, I heard an interview today on #RadioNZ with pioneering economist and former National Party MP Marilyn Waring, who pointed at that the voluntary sector - if you include all unpaid work including in the home - is larger than any other sector of the economy, in every country where it's been studied. But who cares about our "jobs" when election time rolls around?

@aemon Even if Thunderbird hadn't started adding its (still woefully inadequate) XMPP integration long after Google dropped XMPP, that doesn't address any of the UX points I made here:
    https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/101261017779031151

    > To me is a clear case of PR power + net effect. You can't UX-fix that.

You sure can't compete with PR power + net effect with a UX that makes users do ten times the work for the same output, and a user-blaming development community.

@valerauko it sounds like you are much more familiar with the implementation details than me. I'm just laying out what the existing UI of the apps leads users to expect, and pointing out that to be fit for purpose, the operation of the apps needs to keep the promises its UI makes, every time.

@valerauko I guess so, yes ;-) BTW in context, it seems like you were asking me what my ideal UI is. User eXperience covers a lot more than just what the UI is like, including consistency; whether doing the same thing in the UI always gets a user the same result.

@jcbrand you seemed tob implying that I was wrong to agree with his views on one thing (Electron) while disagreeing with his views on the supreme importance of software engineers ;-) Which would be a classic black/white. But let's not get distracted by this, we're having one of the most productive conversations I think I've ever had on the fedivese.

@z428 @jcbrand ah ok. That sounds a bit like the way I had #Pinafore set up on my ancient #Android (4.2.2). When I went to Pinafore.social #FennecFDroid, there was an option to add a bookmark to my start page, so it behaved more like a native app, while still running in Fennec.

@dimitrisk that's also a worthy hack, but it would be better to have the problem solved in the fediverse apps themselves (I believe being able to turn off notifications for boosts and favourites is an option in Mastodon).
