    > eMail's thrown in as well, so maybe use that?

Use that how? With only what's currently built into Git + email protocols. Before giving your answer, please make sure you didn't just start reinventing an existing web protocol like WebMentions or Webfinger.

My notifications have become a nightmare. I either need to be able to turn off notifications for boosts and favourites, or have a separate tab for replies, or be able to mark a notification as read and have it disappear for ever.

@nolan I tried again and I noticed that it's now copying the @name, but not the full @name@address.foo. Also it still seems to break threads.

@jkb have you seen Trainspotting, or read the book? I have known many people on methadone, and they will tell you that Irvine Welsh was not exaggerating. Coming off opiates isn't just vaguely disappointing. It's a living hell. Speaking of which, Hellraiser is another film and book inspired by experiences of coming off opioids. I have tried many drugs but I would never go near them.

@jkb I'm a drug law reformer. I think no drug should be illegal to use (Portugal is on the right track), and any drug less dangerous than alcohol should be commercially available. Opioids are not in that category, according to Professor Nutt et Al in the Lancet, and their exhaustive research matches my own observations as a drug user and reform activist. Capitalism may makes heroin addiction, but abolishing it won't make opioids any less dangerous.

@jkb what you describe would also be the experience of many people if you took the internet away for a day. It doesn't even begin to compare to the physical symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, let alone opium withdrawal.

@jkb did you read the linked article? It discussed a study that showed a strong correlation between people taking opioids for wisdom tooth surgery, and becoming addicted to opioids later in life.

@mlg from my POV, it's like I'm describing a serial killer, and you're demanding I offer a better alternative for allocating death ;-)

@mlg so capitalism, as anti-capitalists use the term, is a cluster of engines (incl. states) for allocating control of resources away from most people, to capitalists. In the same way FB and other datafarms are a cluster of engines for doing the same thing with data.

@mlg but ... why do you have to pay anything? Why is money even a thing? Why is land considered property? Because the state says so, and threatens violence against you if you don't conform. The result of that, in every country without strong policies to serve as a counterforce, is that ownerships of land concentrates in ever fewer hands; specifically, the hands of capitalists.

@Wolf480pl there are heaps of cases where a large number of simple changes need to be made to multiple files, like tidying up commenting, or adding a license statement to each file in a project. Engineers can waste time on those tasks, or non-engineers can do them, and learn some stuff in the process. Simple GUI interfaces make it possible for far more people to make these kinds of contributions, and generally make code less of a black box.

@Wolf480pl @sir did you see the linked comment? I was just actioning the suggestion made there, rather than adding a comment saying "ok, do that then". I'm trying to get a potentially useful piece of non-free software licensed and free software. I don't know why I'm getting my balls busted instead of encouragement.

@strypey Thanks to the grouping XEP mentioned in https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0387.html , the server list on https://jmp.chat/suggested_servers.html, and the compliance testers (either referenced in the last link or superior ones), people at least know which service providers are complying with XEP-0387. #XMPP

@adfeno do you know if anyone from Kallithea is involved in the discussions for the #ForgeFed extensions to #ActivityPub, to allow forges to join together as a federated GH replacement?

@xj9 BTW I'm a keen tester of bleeding edge apps and I haven't tried #SSB yet, because I can't install it on a 32-bit PC without going through the valley of the shadow of death that is #NPM. If there's one thing I agree with Drew about, it's that choosing the right tools for the job matters. Like folks building #Electron apps, I think Dominic chose the wrong tools. Until that's fixed, SSB will remain a promising concept, but far from being ready for primetime. @alcinnz @Wolf480pl

@xj9 you have every right to your preferences. Using the web isn't compulsory, not should it be. But if we are talking about a replacement for GH, a fully functional web interface is a baseline requirement.
