Link rot is a problem for most websites, but it's especially hard on news orgs. How are we expected to take the arbiters of information seriously in their duty to inform the public when they can't even maintain access to their archives for a few years?
More importantly, the Web Archive can't capture every news source and it's an increasingly vital role too. We're losing access to vast swaths of public knowledge almost as soon its generated
Any #Pharo#OpenBSD enthusiasts? Here is an initial PoC that I want to discuss with upstream on how to get the needed bits into their tree. There are still some issues to iron out but I am done with guessing for today.
When I put a song on repeat, it often stays there for 3-5 months, until it has run its course. That's months of listening to almost no other music but one song.
I want to do a bit of research on opinions on federation for my #decentwebeu project. I'm digging for arguments in favor of decentralising. Please boost and/or answer any of these questions:
1) How aware are you of the federated nature of this network in your day-to-day use?
2) Which, if any, concepts of federated networks do you find challenging, confusing or foreign?
3) Why are federated networks "better" than centralised social networks (silos)?
@moonman i don't think there is one, but there is the word berufsbeleidigt, which means 'having the job of being offended', used for sjw type people who made a career of it (in germany, some green party people, for example).
@kai I had never seen it before. I'm glad to get rid of the nearly useless column, even though about 40% of the page on the right-hand side is just empty space.
I don't find the notifications column to be all that useful. Notifications should be ephemeral, and therefore erased frequently. An indicator with a drop-down would be sufficient, I think.
The blank space could be used for something more useful, like replies/mentions and the conversations which they were part of. (I'm sure @kai also has some ideas for that column.)
Hard not to feel like a broken discarded puppet when you realize that a job you were supposed to hear back from "in 3-5 days" hasn't contacted you and someone you know is starting a new job real soon now.
