I'm releasing a free, #opensource #3d model of a patch of crabgrass! It's basically grass with runners that make it look like a crab.

    https://radiance.thinkmoult.com/html/crabgrass.html

Having multiple grass species in your model repository is vital to creating realistic looking grassy fields. This grassy patch is special, because it's been defined using #radiance photometrically accurate material definitions.

Gizmodo has an article about how the Microsoft Optical Intellimouse series helped change the way we use mouses (from ball mice). https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2019/04/20-years-ago-microsoft-changed-how-we-mouse-forever/

I own one of these mice, and in fact I have released it as a free, #opensource #3d model here!

    https://radiance.thinkmoult.com/html/mouse-microsoft-intellimouse-optical-usb.html

It is photometrically accurate, so its materials and textures have been carefully measured and calibrated.

Software is trending in the wrong direction. Decreased transparency, centralisation, and proprietary monopolies.

In this article I describe the 5 ingredients to ethical software:

    - open data
    - open source
    - distributed deployment
    - decentralised hosting
    - end to end encryption

    https://thinkmoult.com/five-fundamental-facets-of-ethical-software.html

Let's make software less about profit, and more about people again.

Did you know there's an #opensource equivalent to Google Street View? It's called #OpenStreetCam, mapping the world's roads with dashcam images, and uses machine learning & computer vision to improve #OpenStreetMaps. It's easy to get started, so check it out and contribute today! All you need is a phone, a car, and a mount.

    https://openstreetcam.org/

Recently, Telenav has partnered with Waylens to create customised cams to contribute with. This box just arrived over the weekend :) Happy mapping!

Have you considered contributing to #OpenStreetMaps? It's like Wikipedia but for maps - a map that everybody can edit! Today, the NSW Address Import project added thousands of addresses for West Pennant Hills, Warrawee, and West Pymble.

If you know those areas, check it out and start mapping!

Dear #fediverse. I work as an #architect and design buildings that harm the planet. I am looking for a practicing #engineer who can teach me building energy modelling using #opensource tools. I have a background in software dev, run #gentoo #linux and am willing to learn down to the details.

I do not have a background in heat transfer or thermodynamics, which is why I am asking for a tutor.

I promise to use this to design better buildings.

Please help retoot this so I can find someone.

@mayel @aral @deadsuperhero @aaronpk @cwebber @bhaugen totally. We need an ID that we can migrate from service to service. OpenID plus more.

Right now my data is spread. My identity is spread. And frankly I don't own my ID. If I wanted to migrate instances I'm at the mercy of the instance admins.

@hairylarry @ron @PinkCathodeCat @brennen it sounds just fine in principle :) of course like all technical things the devil is in the detail. So maybe do a few small tests first! Im sure the folks on IRC can help too.

@hairylarry @ron @PinkCathodeCat @brennen sounds like you want ZFS. It does exactly what you're asking for. I rsync to a ZFS filesystem and then if anything gets deleted, I go back in time in the ZFS filesystem to get it back.

If you don't have ZFS you can do the same with rsnapshot.

In fact, you can do the same with plain old rsync and hard links. Hard links are amazing. Basically the file always exists until all pointers to the inode are deleted.
