Huge respect and solidarity to @ldopa for the way this racist shit has been handled. Myasstodon has seen some enormously bad faith arguing after a user was faced with overt racism from a wl account, despite so many people stepping in to try and get the admin to stop framing it disingenuously. It's not ok.

If people want this place to be better than twitter they've got to stop acting like it is.

Racism should have no defence.

Yeah, I too would rather be here having a happy time and not have so much “drama” but this is our reality. People come at us with the most vile terms and someone would rather back themselves into a corner than admit, “that was fucked up, I’m sorry that happened and I’m sorry I reacted the way I did”. And I would rather not know that there are people who would choose to back THAT person up or stay where they are because they’re comfortable.

If you are committed to not making this another birdsite/hellsite, your first, ultimate, top priority is keeping marginalized people protected from hateful people. That is the main and crucial difference between Mastodon and Twitter & Tumblr.

The way that a marginalized person reacts when there is a breach in this protection is not what makes this turn into a toxic place.

@trwnh @michel_slm AUR/COPR/PPA repos do have the advantage of being able to do releases more frequently than main distros, but if the maintainer goes awol, the situation ends up being the same as community maintained packages in the main repo. It also further fragments support options for people using the software - do they report a bug to the distro, the third-party repo, or upstream? And upstream maintaining a third-party repo for N different distros doesn't just scale.
