@seanl only if software is built to use it.

@thegibson Google determined a code sequence that stops all speculative execution on x86 CPUs, called a retpoline.
It isn't a full patch unless all software is built with the retpoline feature though. :/

@kaniini I'll block instances if they're doing illegal stuff (like child abuse) or block annoying individuals if they're just trying to cause trouble, but apart from that many of these advisories are silly.
It's probably not a good idea to block instances because some users had some bad takes or bad hair days at some time in the past. There will always be disagreements and drama. If you block yourself off from much of the fediverse because of trivial reasons then you'll be missing out on a lot of the value it contains. -

i didn't realize you were mikh`to. o.O
also my instance was screwed up and for some reason i couldn't see any messages from you.
i saw my message referenced on your blocklist advisory and it was kind of annoying because i didn't know anyone was going to include it in any advisory, and it irritated me a little. but then i found out that my instance was screwed up and therefore any message involving you was hidden.
(i modified my instance to hide crap from people who my instance thought blocked me, which has worked out nicely a lot of the time except for early mastodon bugs causing weirdness like this).
anyway, point being, i am sorry if i have caused you any trouble with my nighttime ranting (pooptooting?) earlier >.<

my point is that giving moderation privileges to somebody should be done after a very careful consideration of the person. months of observation, etc.

pro tip: just because somebody uses alternative pronouns doesn't mean they should be moderating your "safe" space

i'll sleep on it for now, but I predict we're going to be seeing some instance closures soon

i want to point out that not all "safe" spaces on mastodon are run by people who have business running a "safe" space.
but who? and why?! perhaps that's what the precommitment hash i just posted is related to. who knows?!

it links to posts of admins discussing the abuse, but generally does not link to the actual abuse itself.
primary sources, maaaaaaan

it's not 2.distsn.org, it's the others that he posts with prescribed suggestions on how to block them. an admin should make their own mind up, and that involves not having tainted data.
it's news, not news and analysis.

hah, i tried to use their telegram link and it did not work:
Method:
contacts.resolveUsername
Result:

well, i don't care if they block me personally or not. it is their right to do so.
their FAQ does have a point of contact for instance admins listed there, however, but it requires installing Telegram, which requires signing up for yet another service and disclosing my telephone number to people who i don't know

and finally, to be absolutely clear: if you're going to publish a "blocklist advisory" (or any other "advisory") and you mention somebody you are blocking for some reason, meaning they cannot contact you to request that you *do not do this*, it is really a dick move

kaniini (kaniini@mastodon.dereferenced.org)'s status on Friday, 05-Jan-2018 01:37:57 EST kaniini
which i mean, sure, they didn't have to ask permission obviously.
but still, i do not endorse that blocklist advisory at all, and want *nothing to do with it*
my view on blocklist advisories is pretty simple: admins should make their own decisions about who they federate with, which means that they should spend time to research the instances themselves and make up their own mind. blocklist advisories which have prescriptive content are therefore toxic.
