Stephen Fry in my book just made an interesting connection between word rhymes and metaphors/similes ("rhyming concepts"). Parroting the ribbonfarm writing course a little bit, the connection seems like Schmidhuber style compressibility/interest: https://arxiv.org/abs/0812.4360. Lame rhymes and lame metaphors are just ones that don't offer new compression.
nega-walt-whitman in my mind with his rigid metrical verse would herald a swing towards more "new millennial conservative" values, giving us a new conception of fixed social roles and expectations. Kindof based on Strauss–Howe generational theory: "During The High institutions are strong and individualism is weak."
If i were to try to write an essay about the value of enforced social norms I would call it "Friends don't let friends live and let live"
Though I think if we are in wartimes, maybe there is an opportunity for something like a nega-walt whitman: someone to make metrical verse not so shameful & signify a cultural shift back towards a new set of structured social values
About a year and a half ago I slipped into a 3 month long bout of psychosis and said a LOT of embarrassing things on social media when I was crazy.
All the time between then and now, having gone from a six figure salary to relying on my parents, too many symptoms until a few months ago to do anything productive, has been very challenging. But I've been reluctant to reach out to people out of fear of embarrassing myself again and being too much of a whiner.
@vgr Sure! So this is for the header bar image on the front page and a thumbnail for developers. Do you want to use the logo that you already have up on the homepage and just add some sort of background graphic?
@telos hey man I was a big fan of your talk! I actually was talking about it a little bit on this channel the other day. Wish I could have made it out to see it in person
@vgr I was actually reacting to the recent Kim Petras backlash in the pop music world (though it seemed maybe too lowbrow in this particular forum to directly mention haha):
pop enthusiasts skew heavily LGBT so you'd think they'd support this openly transgender artist, but because she is working with/made a statement defending Dr. Luke (alleged abuser of Kesha), she is now persona non grata despite 3 fairly considerate apologies.
Many examples in recent times of well-crafted apologies that only win over a small portion of the offended audience, and only temporarily—the people demand blood!
Blockchain verified social proof is essentially only machine readable, the widget would act as an adaptor to plug that info back in to the human visual judgement system
Idea: A widget companies can embed on their website that visually displays some (blockchain verified) social signaling proof of work (like total donations to charities or something).
In a certain sense this already exists in an analog way with certifications and awards graphics and "badges", the key difference being dynamic data updating, the addition of decentralization, and "blockchain magic".
Link it back to the org's website for that sweet sweet SEO boost
• I learned on my most recent job that there is a truly amazing appetite from businesses for third-party visuals that give the appearance of credibility & external validation.
• "trust on the blockchain" was interesting but was a little handwavey—as long as humans are making the judgement calls visuals will remain dominant imo
