Failure pattern i'm seeing a lot lately:

User creates a ticket on software bug/issue tracking tool. Treats issue tracking system as a discussion pulpit. Told to discuss on another forum.

User & onlookers interprets benign response as rude, or worse as admission of guilt. Decry the sins against them.

Framed as social slight, report surface affront on social media/journalism. Many take affront with perceived injustice

Developers tarred & feathered by a mob. Locks thread to collaborators only.

I've seen kids reject learning python because the teacher was introducing them to pygame and they perceived it as a language for games. Was literally looked down upon as a toy.

The problem of branding combined with sociological phenomena (elitism etc) is complex and fascinating. Model view culture had a great piece exploring some of the nuances about how languages are perceived https://modelviewculture.com/pieces/c-is-manly-python-is-for-n00bs-how-false-stereotypes-turn-into-technical-truths

But weird that these motivations manifest even early in childhood.

@jankoekepan @HTHR I think the answer to the locality problem is something like a "Platform Cooperative" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_cooperative

Seems to be working out pretty good so far over at https://social.coop/ tho this kind of thing lends itself better toward digital services due to it being easier to bootstrap bits vs IRL operations.

    > "Well, [Centralized Platform] is a business and can run how they want. It's not censorship if they simply decide not to serve you!"

Ok fair. Tell me again how your "it's not censorship since they aren't the government" argument operates in a society where the commons is being systematically walled off and aggressively captured by business interests with monopolistic practices? Organizations who end up taking on the role of private police forces governing what once used to be a public area?

@clacke There are some tricks that minecraft uses because it's limited in height - they can use RLE and change the xyz coordinate byte order to make it more compressible.

A technique I'm looking at are using space filling curves since i'm more interested in fast access to local changes, but they also seem to function well for fully 3d arbitrary chunk streaming.

Mostly asking this stuff because I thought people might have other thoughts.

My interests are developing massively scalable game worlds, so anything that has good support for scaling stuff out (like akka) would be a boon.

My interests are mostly in not reinventing the wheel here, so i'd rather not learn entirely knew languages like erlang or haskell if I can avoid it.

@mattcropp @sarahjeong As a relatively isolated autistic individual, this notion of emotional labor is spot on for me. I got in when FB required .edu address. Pull for me was using it as a crutch to help reach others with similar interests whom I wouldn't otherwise have the IRL social skills to talk to.

Makes sense that people who aren't lacking in that area would likely find the labor invisible.

Crude analogy: people who don't depend on wheelchairs tend not notice when ramps are missing?

For background and history on the concept of sending data, first check out this stackoverflow question/answer set, which includes a great diagram on what it looks like to 'call' another computer https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/68790/how-does-a-signal-travel-down-a-telephone-wire

And then take a look at how they ran telephone wires, set up microwave towers to handle longer distance, and eventually an entire world wide network http://www.telcomhistory.org/vm/scienceLongDistance.shtml

Then try this exploration of how it shifted to telephone-over-internet (+beyond?)

"In the 1950s, to be a product engineer was just listen to the client, build a product. But we didn't really understand the downstream effects of that. The reality is now we can see the disparate effects of small decisions. How do we redefine an engineering ethics where, for example, the environment is a stakeholder and considered equal with the client?"

I spent most of the evening curating content I've collected on twitter about vagal nerve stimulation.

Yes... My internet search history is full of search terms involving how butt sex can cure hiccups and the odd sexual interest of john harvey kellogg inflating people's bladders to induce vagal stimulation.

We get sick of the hive crowding us. Exploring new maps where we think no one has ever been. Then wander home hungry because that's where all the food is. The older and wiser among us forage further away from the hive, more experienced and less to lose. The lucky few who find food in the wilderness may choose to stay there: starting their own colony.

"My take is that it boils down to bad business models. If it’s going to be explosive growth first, and then you’ve got to tack on something to make money afterwards, it’s always going to be advertising. That’s always going to be terrible because it means that in order to keep going, you have to keep people coming back as many times as possible. In other words, you’re motivated to make people addicted. And yes, venture capitalists are partially responsible for this."
