It’s actually very difficult to convert a proprietary app to open-source. There’s no developer community and the build and deployment processes are going to be really baroque.

With a web service, it’ll be worse because it assumes that company’s exact infrastructure.

In the case of Google+, I would be very surprised if it converting that codebase to a federated social network were at all easier than starting from scratch.

They do this a lot, actually. Wave, for example is now an Apache project that nobody uses.

The Bajoran chargers are just Cardassian chargers with pieces hacked off and the gaps filled with epoxy and duct tape.

They're still easier to use than the Cardassian chargers, though.

The thing about 4chan et. al. is that it takes that shitty-teenager stage of development and normalizes it.

To be honest, I don't know if it's just a phase for the individual channer 'til they grow out of it and we're just seeing the current cohort or if it's causing arrested development.

Compared to the other entertainment of the era, Doom was tame. The graphics were good *for a game* but nothing compared to movies or TV.

And in Doom, the enemies were unambiguously evil and non-human. There was no moral quandary to killing them at all.

(The games that worry me are the military shooters where you kill other human beings on the other side of a war and are then told you did the right thing.)

So I'm probably biased, but no, I don't think that's the connection. That thing where you say horrible things for fun? That's teenaged boyhood. I did it as a teen, but fortunately I didn't have the Internet at the time so there's no record.

(For the record, it wasn't that I was (e.g.) pro-Nazi; for sheltered teen me, WW2 was ancient history and it never occurred to me that someone would be hurt by what I said. As if I'd made a joke about the Napoleonic wars.)

(Not to derail from your main point, but this doesn’t jibe with my memories of those times. The main appeal of Doom was that it replaced fast reflexes with tactical thinking as the main requirement. The gamers in my circle were almost exclusively computer nerds. I blame the next gen, when games became more mainstream and gamers combined the old guard’s persecution complex with jock-style win-at-any-cost aggression.)

Cardassian chargers have astoundingly terrible ergonomics. It's possible to get one to work with most phones but it's usually not worth the effort.

The Vulcan one is a featureless gray sphere with a slight flat spot so it doesn't roll. Nobody has any idea how to use it. When asked, Vulcans will respond either implicitly or explicitly that it's obvious and your question makes no sense.
