I hope it continues. I've always liked Microsoft's stuff better, but it locked you into Windows. I couldn't take something I worked in from a MS tool and load it up on Linux. I rarely wanted to, but it felt precarious.

This is actually the situation I'm in with music. I want to switch to Linux, but Reaper runs poorly in WINE, and most VSTs are Windows- or Mac-only.

@elizafox past a certain size a site becomes effectively a public place and it changes the nature of the appropriate moderation of said site. Otherwise you end up with an Occupy Wall Street/Zucotti Park almost ancap situation where there is nowhere to effectively mount protest where you can be seen that isn't whim to private interests. I believe Facebook meets this criteria. The mechanisms by which is shows or does not show content should be known and auditable. It is in the public interest for the moderation to be known and public have input.

Considering how badass the service is for working with existing datasets, I expected that they help you through creating datasets of your own for sharing. Nope! #datascience #statistics #personalProjects #personal

New semester, new professors. For one of my classes, the professor is very unwelcoming to engage with face-to-face, despite his being conversational during his lectures. I haven't encountered this before, but I'll see what variables much be at play that are leading him to be so sour. He might to talk by email, for instance. #college #personal #SacState

@zatnosk I'd say that if you wish to proceed down this path at all, go for the latter then gradually generalize until you find yourself satisfying the former.

Are there any open source fitness tracking apps or software? I have a nice app for my pebble that I can export GPX files from my bike rides, but it doesn't keep track of all the rides. This I want to export it to somewhere.

"Comcast has sued the state of Vermont to try to avoid a requirement to build 550 miles of new cable lines. Comcast's lawsuit against the Vermont Public Utility Commission (VPUC) was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Vermont and challenges several provisions in the cable company's new 11-year permit to offer services in the state. One of the conditions in the permit says that "Comcast shall construct no less than 550 miles of line extensions into un-cabled areas during the [11-year] term." Comcast would rather not do that. The company's court complaint says that Vermont is exceeding its authority under the federal Cable Act while also violating state law and Comcast's constitutional rights:"

Nothing is making you have to operate in that State, Comcast, nor do you have an automatic right to do so. Ā You essentially are being asked to provide something in return, which apparently you do not want to do.

@lnxw48a1 @xahlee @bob Somewhat the same for me. I've lacked graphics-capable hardware for all but the last year and a half, leading my brother and I to never quite ride the hype waves of games and worlds that the media focuses on.

Now, my constraint is time. Instant messaging now seems tedious for me, even when scheduled, whereas in middle and high school it was a primary joy.

@lnxw48a1 @xahlee @bob One of my middle and high school friends was one of the highly successful merchants on the service prior to its economic collapse. I'm glad to report that he's an #economics major at my school, but I suspect that much of his earlier brilliance has diffused after years of underutilization.

On this note, I wonder whether virtual worlds might give young persons more opportunities for growth and than real worlds do.

@bob @xahlee @lnxw48a1 #GaiaOnline was like this, but it at least had great micro-communities. When the owners of the service started making a ridiculous number of pay-real-money-to-own items, I and many others left. Its economy is now in shambles.

    > Then after World War II, everybody met up and decided to only do ethical human experiments from then on. And the most important part of being ethical was to have all experiments monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) made of important people who could check whether experiments were ethical or not. I dutifully parroted all this back on the post-test (ā€œBlindly trusting authority to make our ethical decisions for us is the best way to separate ourselves from the Nazis!ā€) and received my Study Investigator Certification.

    > I sometimes worry that people misunderstand the case against bureaucracy. People imagine it’s Big Business complaining about the regulations preventing them from steamrolling over everyone else. That hasn’t been my experience. Big Business – heck, Big Anything – loves bureaucracy. They can hire a team of clerks and secretaries and middle managers to fill out all the necessary forms, and the rest of the company can be on their merry way. It’s everyone else who suffers. The amateurs, the entrepreneurs, the hobbyists, the people doing something as a labor of love. Wal-Mart is going to keep selling groceries no matter how much paperwork and inspections it takes; the poor immigrant family with the backyard vegetable garden might not.

@lnxw48a1 Thanks for bringing me in the loop about this discussion! This was a big topic of discussion in the philosophy class that I took about business ethics. Large business interests sometimes conduct public policy campaigns that would supposedly remove gov meddling in biz (a desired thing among freemarketeers), when in fact the policy does little more than reduce the burden upon only the large business interests, leaving issues for little guys.
