@technomancy Wait... I'm suddenly realizing the implications of this. Are you able to disconnect the keyboard and "monitor" part? Could this be a full portable laptop-replacement computer?
@jz Well it's nice to see the rest of the internet catching up. For a while I seemed to be the only Signal complainer, and that's because not long after it was first released I wanted to try running it myself (including the server side) and then encountered the problems you've listed. There was also a hostile reaction towards LibreSignal.
On the upside, Signal probably is better than WhatsApp or Telegram.
Problems we are having with #Signal: * It is and will remain centralized (clear strategy of *not* federating servers) * It requires strong identifiers/selectors (phone#) to use * Author disallows distribution by anyone but Google, although free/libre * It keeps pushing away verification of fingerprint in interface * It relies on Google+Amazon infrastructure * Its funding is shady (OTF = Radio Free Asia = USG)
= clearly unethical choices, unjustifiable by accessibility or technological reasons.
hoo boy glad I got on that sweet Romneycare so I'm not uninsured with some assurance that it won't vanish (not so sure that will be true about the ACA) but paying the insurance bills now and single payer healthcare when
@craigmaloney@cwebber I've mentioned it before, but identi.ca launched the summer I was an intern at CC (on my birthday, no less). Evan came by the office for a hurried visit with rejon. It was formative moment.
@LWFlouisa I'm not on a Windows machine... I'm on GuixSD
That said I don't think a GNU/Linux machine is particularly invulnerable to viruses, it's just usually better maintained and less targeted for desktop computer users
Reminded yet again that people tend to think a technology is simple because they currently have libraries in their preferred language that they like using, rather than because the underlying technology is actually simple to use or well thought out
