People make the implicit assumption that content shared over a social network must always be on the record, and that content shared over a video call must never be on the record, but there is no reason one can't do it the other way around, or leave record keeping out of it altogether. Old data on a social network is usually stale data anyway, so there's little reason to keep it around, except for its sentimental value, and that's what downloadable archive files are for.

If there was a social network where old content fading away was an explicit feature, I'd be interested in that. Snapchat pretty much started out as a social network where two of the main features were intimacy (posts are only shared to the people you pick) and the non-permanence of shared content (snaps could only be viewed momentarily and would then disappear). People found ways around that, but it at least didn't encourage the keeping of records.

I still want more work to be done on Mastodon in order to make it possible to either delete or reduce the visibility of old toots. What I wrote about some personal situation is never going to be read by people who want to check out my profile before they follow me, but could definitely be of interest to anyone who's looking for dirt on me. I don't want random people to snoop around my old content.

I'm getting frustrated. I need an income, and I've exhausted so many options. I'm seriously running out of ideas. I don't feel that sending out job applications to random companies is the right way forward. I have tried that kind of opportunistic approach before and I always end up with a job that I have to quit from because it doesn't work for me. I'm not put together like other people. I can't play the "pretend to like your job" game because I can't concentrate when I try to do that.

Today, the fate of Erna Solberg's conservative government is determined. The Christian Democrats are voting over whether they should change sides. Solberg will lose her post if they opt to support the Labour Party.

My job application was rejected after the second interview. They said it was because they don't want to hire an extra person right now, but that doesn't make sense to me. You wouldn't interview someone twice and bring in someone from the HR department if no possibility of a hire existed to begin with. It seems more likely that the HR lady heard something she didn't like and put a stop to it. My gut feeling was right all along. I know what getting the job looks like, and this wasn't it.

I swear to god there was an earlier singer who sounded exactly like Avril Lavigne, because I remember thinking that Avril Lavigne sounded like "an imitation of that other singer" when she first emerged. Can anyone remember who that singer might've been? More than one person has suggested Alanis Morisette, but whoever I'm talking about sounded way more similar than that.

I choose 1968 because it was a year of social change and the year Martin Luther King Jr. died. The following year, Apollo 11 brought humans to another planet for the first time.

1989 was the high point, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and a number of other positive developments.

@debbie No decentralised group has ever been victorious when faced with an organised enemy. Hunter-gatherer societies were anarchies in some respects. Look how long they lasted when faced with an organised enemy (white people) with large and strong power structures.

Yes, it sucks ass, and it would be wonderful if anarchy could work, but it is, by its very nature, an unstable system that turns into a power structure the moment a charismatic leader turns up and unites people around him.
