People make the implicit assumption that content shared over a social network must always be on the record, and that content shared over a video call must never be on the record, but there is no reason one can't do it the other way around, or leave record keeping out of it altogether. Old data on a social network is usually stale data anyway, so there's little reason to keep it around, except for its sentimental value, and that's what downloadable archive files are for.

@JollyOrc Sure, and perhaps you could include the toot I just added to the thread.

If there was a social network where old content fading away was an explicit feature, I'd be interested in that. Snapchat pretty much started out as a social network where two of the main features were intimacy (posts are only shared to the people you pick) and the non-permanence of shared content (snaps could only be viewed momentarily and would then disappear). People found ways around that, but it at least didn't encourage the keeping of records.

I still want more work to be done on Mastodon in order to make it possible to either delete or reduce the visibility of old toots. What I wrote about some personal situation is never going to be read by people who want to check out my profile before they follow me, but could definitely be of interest to anyone who's looking for dirt on me. I don't want random people to snoop around my old content.

Compared to the cat, me and my roommate are interdimensional beings.
ME: *busy with important interdimensional affairs on YouTube*
CAT: Pet me. Pet me! Play with me. Fun? Yes? Yes? Now? No? How about now? Pleeeeease?

day to have that say. But consider deeply that the values being challenged right now might require getting prepared to defend them with everything those who identify with them, have.β
----I just don't think the Corporatocracy and corrupt monied interests are going to let us vote their power away. Much like climate change, we are BEYOND the tipping point. This terrifies me. 3/3

the disintegration of this country as people refuse to accept the dictates of this round of leadership. It looks like this is what's happening all around the world right now. American hegemony has been a nightmare both globally and domestically and I don't believe we will ever be allowed to vote our way out of this predicament. Those of us against everything trump represents might just have to fight a literal fight at some point to survive. Go ahead and vote, it only takes part of one 2/3

I know it's not cool to be negative when so many people are excited about the possibilities of the midterms, but I feel if I don't express myself I'm just going to burst. The good news is my friend Mac summed up my thoughts nicely, so I will just share what he wrote:

βI'm of the opinion the crazy eugenics experiment called America is facing it's end. Trump is the ugliest way i could have imagined for it to happen. I expect it to become much worse, or perhaps we are witnessing 1/3 -

Closer to the truth: I want a war. What's my excuse?

I'm getting frustrated. I need an income, and I've exhausted so many options. I'm seriously running out of ideas. I don't feel that sending out job applications to random companies is the right way forward. I have tried that kind of opportunistic approach before and I always end up with a job that I have to quit from because it doesn't work for me. I'm not put together like other people. I can't play the "pretend to like your job" game because I can't concentrate when I try to do that.

Today, the fate of Erna Solberg's conservative government is determined. The Christian Democrats are voting over whether they should change sides. Solberg will lose her post if they opt to support the Labour Party.
This would be highly unfortunate. I don't think the Labour Party's current leader should be prime minister. He reminds me of a corporate executive. I think the party has moved too far to the center and has lost its way. https://octodon.social/media/IcMWL_1JTg3OYcI1BSw

My job application was rejected after the second interview. They said it was because they don't want to hire an extra person right now, but that doesn't make sense to me. You wouldn't interview someone twice and bring in someone from the HR department if no possibility of a hire existed to begin with. It seems more likely that the HR lady heard something she didn't like and put a stop to it. My gut feeling was right all along. I know what getting the job looks like, and this wasn't it.

I swear to god there was an earlier singer who sounded exactly like Avril Lavigne, because I remember thinking that Avril Lavigne sounded like "an imitation of that other singer" when she first emerged. Can anyone remember who that singer might've been? More than one person has suggested Alanis Morisette, but whoever I'm talking about sounded way more similar than that.

I choose 1968 because it was a year of social change and the year Martin Luther King Jr. died. The following year, Apollo 11 brought humans to another planet for the first time.
1989 was the high point, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and a number of other positive developments.
I choose 2001 because it was the year of the Twin Tower attacksβthe starting point for a major shift in rhetoric and geopoliticsβthe year we lost our innocence.

Uhhh...
Trump wants to change the constitution so being born in the United States doesn't automatically make you a citizen...
That's....
I have never heard anything like that before... The implications of that are... extremely unfortunate.
Meanwhile, NATO is legit preparing for nuclear war with the Russians.
Can someone explain to me exactly when everyone started losing their minds? We had such a good run between 1968 and 2001. Looks like we're about to smash it all to pieces.

@debbie No decentralised group has ever been victorious when faced with an organised enemy. Hunter-gatherer societies were anarchies in some respects. Look how long they lasted when faced with an organised enemy (white people) with large and strong power structures.
Yes, it sucks ass, and it would be wonderful if anarchy could work, but it is, by its very nature, an unstable system that turns into a power structure the moment a charismatic leader turns up and unites people around him.
