In case anyone hasn't noticed yet: Smartphones are now a mature technology and nothing particularly exciting will happen in that space for a while. Like with television sets, there will be a gradual evolution as progress marches on, but the fundamental concept won't change. In this analogy, apps are like TV shows. Some are cancelled after a single season, others run for years, and there are established formats and genres that they usually need to fit into in order to be successful.

Okay, I've drawn up a footprint for the Chinese triple 3.5 mm motherboard audio socket that I'm going to use for my project. This will let me fit the 9 jacks I need on the narrow side of my 99 mm wide circuit board.

What I thought was L0735 on a grainy AliExpress JPEG turned out to be LOTES, and in some Chinese person's Documents and Settings folder, I found a datasheet for it. Good god!

@leadore @dr1ft @halcy @WAHa_06x36 @jk The goal of those experiments isn't to find a comfortable light to look at that will emit the right wavelengths, but rather, to figure out which wavelengths can be eliminated while still achieving the same effect, in order to figure out which of them actually matter.

@leadore @dr1ft @halcy @WAHa_06x36 @jk So perhaps the right question to ask is: What is the sRGB colour of a light source which includes those wavelengths, and the answer would be: Pretty much anything that emits a bluish-white light. A computer monitor, for example, which is why they tell you to not stare at those close to bedtime, since that'll keep you awake.

It's basically bluer than what your monitor can render, like a blue laser. The XYZ value is [0.1208, 0.0755, 0.8137].

To be more specific, these are the sRGB/XYZ values for a light source with all its energy concentrated in the band between 460 and 485 mm. Very few real light sources can pull that off, of course.

@leadore @dr1ft @halcy @WAHa_06x36 @jk I got tired of the whole "trying to find lights that match daylight" game and made a system that actually measures the colour of daylight and reproduces that on a bunch of Philips Hue bulbs. Next summer, I think I'll try to record a full day so I can play it back in the middle of winter. That, or I'll have to get someone in Australia to record values with the same RGBW sensor that I'm using.

@leadore @dr1ft @halcy @WAHa_06x36 @jk I think I read somewhere that 6500K is approximately the colour of overcast daylight in Northern Europe. It is a pretty cold colour. The colour of vertical sunlight is closer to 5900K, a warmer colour.
