Back in the GTalk days, you could talk to your entire Google contacts list via federated XMPP.

So even back then I had way more contacts on XMPP than GNUSocial or Identica.

Google played a large role in killing off XMPP usage and the day they announced sunsetting GTalk was when I realized they're just another embrace-extend-extinguish monopolist.

Society needs self-hostable, scalable and functional alternatives to surveillance capitalist systems of manipulation and censorship.

Never feel you're too small to start a movement, you are intelligent, you have passions and you care about things very seriously, and I guarantee there are thousands if not, millions who see eye to eye to you. Get organized in your area. Form a movement, and most importantly enlist the leadership of minorities.

Life hack if an oAuth app asks for too many permissions on your GitHub profile, just remove (parts of) the "scope" parameter. Not sure why this isn't a built-in feature, tbh. Also works on some other websites with oAuth.

One of the most absurd things about capitalism is how it effectively puts "we could've automated the process of creating this with no detectable loss of quality, but we made workers do it instead!" on products as like a sign of quality, and people eat it up

bottom line: Don't trust the shiny advertising brochure which tells you about end-to-end encryption, security and privacy if you only get a black box at the end. Only #FreeSoftware, #OpenStandards, #federation and the ability to self host will be able to secure your privacy.
