Me: No way I'm gonna watch an hour of some guy smelting a ring. But I'll look a bit just to see what this special alloy is about.

Me one hour later: Well that was captivating.

Guy hears about purple gold (AuAlβ‚‚) and how hard it is to work with. Guy buys about 6000 USD worth of gold, spends a few *months* on "how hard can it be", smelting it, purifying the result into gold again, smelting it again ...

Bonus track: Juno was the third discovered asteroid, even though there are several larger asteroids, even among the 15 first discovered ones.

Why? Just happenstance because it was near Ceres or Pallas at the time, or is there a reason like it's brighter or otherwise apparently larger? Vesta is over twice the diameter!

web.archive.org/web/2012040622… has details about when the Paris Observatory, the Berliner Astronomisches Jahrbuch and others adopted numbers for asteroids instead of coming up with new planetary symbols in line with old astrological and alchemical symbols.

I haven't read the article with focus, but I don't think it makes it clear who considered Astraea a minor planet in 1930. 😊

Before the IAU, it seems that whether Ceres was a planet or not, and whether Astraea was a planet or not, would depend on whether you were British, a US person, German or French, and which publications you'd be reading, as they were gradually changing over from what's an asteroid and what's a planet between the 1850s and the 1930s.

So Pluto might have been the ninth, thirteenth (because Astraea was an asteroid but the four before it were planets) or fourteenth planet, depending on who you asked, and when.

I'm assuming "took hold" and "were reclassified" is referring to British royal astronomy. Or maybe the IAU, which was in operation by then:

    > The IAU has been the arbiter of planetary and satellite nomenclature since its inception in 1919 (also see Resolution 13 of the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, held in Geneva in 1982).

    > The first minor planet to be discovered was Ceres in 1801, though it was called a 'planet' at the time and an 'asteroid' soon after; the term minor planet was not introduced until 1841, and was considered a subcategory of 'planet' until 1932.

Oh! So at least to some people, unclear by whom it "was considered", Pluto would have been the fourteenth planet, for two years.

I was looking for whether Pluto and Ceres were "planets" at the same time and whether Pluto was the thirteenth planet (the major 8 + the first four discovered asteroids and then Pluto), because en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline… is very unclear about when the major asteroids were degraded to minor planets or asteroids.

    > Was Neptune the thirteenth planet known in the solar system?
Amazingly, the answer is both yes and no. By the time of the discov-
ery of Neptune, in late 1846, astronomers had had forty years to
digest the earlier discoveries of Vesta, Juno, Ceres, and Pallas, the
alleged eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh planets in the solar sys-
tem. Then, less than a year before the discovery of Neptune, a fifth
trans-Martian object and the twelfth planet, Astraea, had been
found. Thus, when Neptune was discovered in late 1846, it took its
place in line as the thirteenth planet. Yet, by 1847 William Her-
schel’s decades-old suggestion that the trans-Martian objects are
minor planets, or asteroids, and not major planets, took hold. In the
minds of many, 1847 was a watershed year during which Ceres, Pal-
las, Juno, Vesta, and Astraea were reclassified as asteroids. Neptune
moved up in line: it was both the thirteenth planet, including major
and minor planets, and the eighth major planet.

I bought a new powerbank and tried it and my phone went into a new charging mode.

I've seen charging, a flash, quick charging, a flash and a smaller flash, but now it's showing super charging, a long flash with an extra bend, and for extra visual impact it's showing the percentage with one decimal so you can see the decimal increase in just a few seconds.

I'm conflating two things here, and they might not be related, but I think they are.

I think showing appreciation has previously been considered kind of a way of conceding social ground, and it isn't that any more, now it's seen as exercising strength. Not everywhere, but in more places.

But it could be two separate things with separate explanations, like maybe fan culture in the 80s and 90s was different from before and now those fans have grown up to be celebrities. And maybe specifically e.g. looking like a nice boss has become more popular.

If it's not kindness and ability to praise as desirable traits moving into the mainstream, do I have some selective bias in what kinds of interviews I'm watching?

Or is this just the next step in the evolution of both fan/celebrity culture and sincere-seeming insincere flattery? More parasocial relationships and better trained psychopaths?

I don't think I saw celebrities being fans of celebrities or praising people not currently in the room in the 80s and 90s.

I love when people spontaneously acknowledge each other as people they look up to and appreciate.

I see it in the office when it's colleagues praising each other for "no reason" because they just haven't said it and it had to be said, like "oh thanks, that helps a lot, well, you always come through, always helpful, you should know that, but thanks again".

But of course with people who are seen more often, celebrities, it's also easier to happen to witness, and I feel like it's becoming more common? I'm not talking courtesy like "yeah, I was working with NN in this movie, such a great director", but someone already a superstar for years, a professional doing a hundred shows per year, meeting someone and getting obviously starstruck and gushing with very specific praise from them as a fellow performer, or front people lifting up their writers and crediting them.

A lot of the climate out there has become nastier, people taking pot shots on social media, political campaigns more negative than ever, but I feel like there's also been a rise in sincere public acts of kindness and warmth.

    Is anyone else seeing this?
