I'm listening to a podcast about the crusades and it's amazingly gonzo so far:

example 1: Priest declares that 2/5 of the crusader army (which he points out) are sinners, and will have to be executed. To prove his vision, he subjects himself to a trial by fire. It ends like you think it does.

example 2: The first crusader assault on Jerusalem uses a single siege ladder, because that's all the wood they can find. It ends like you think it does.

Using my phone as a source of idle distraction seems like years long failed experiment at this point. Time to detox.

    1. Silicon Valley Leaders Sit Down With Wildfire At Investment Meeting After Being Impressed By Its Rapid Expansion
      from The Onion
MENLO PARK, CA—Expressing their desire to get in on the ground floor of what they see as an exciting investment opportunity, top Silicon Valley executives reportedly took a meeting Wednesday with the Sonoma County–based Kincade Fire after being impressed by its rapid expansion. “We’ve seen the moves you’re making and would like to offer a cash infusion of $1 billion to get you to the next level,’’ said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who, according to sources, was accompanied by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and dozens of other tech luminaries eager to partner with the week-old blaze responsible for burning over 75,000 acres and leveling 206 structures. “You started with nothing a few days ago, and what you’ve been able to do in such a short timeline has been really exciting to watch. You’re getting great engagement, and you’ve already disrupted businesses in many areas. We believe there’s just incredible growth potential here.” Reports confirmed the tech leaders went on to ask the wildfire what kind of support it thought it would need to scale up, increase its reach, and go national.

writing automated tests is pretty tedious but its not as tedious as not knowing if your shit works

I’m unfortunately pessimistic about the political prospects of the left because left ‘solutions’ are complicated and difficult. The right offers non-solutions to some of the same problems and they’re way easier for many ordinary people to understand and stomach.

Smoking area discussion this morning, backups:

They should be called restoration services, not backups. Backups imply they can be forgotten. What you want is to restore when something fails, have it work every time, and across a lot of different scenarios. That is often a lot more than just unpacking some files. Fast reliable restoration takes a lot of time and money.

The fact that half-baked, rushed software can beat out well-developed software in the marketplace isn't an argument against perfectionism so much as an indictment against the idea that the market is an ideal predictor of value.

I wonder how long it will take psychologists to go from "mental illness is often the result of trauma" to "the everyday experience of domination in a capitalist society is (re)traumatizing and is likely to lead to mental health problems"

Coining the term "picobureaucracy" to describe all the small, ever growing pile of procedures and details people are expected to follow and remember just to get by. For example: picking out a healthcare plan, figuring out taxes, logins and passwords.

When people use the term snowflake unironically, just remember they're quoting Fight Club, a satire written by a gay man about how male fragility causes men to destroy themselves, resent society and become radicalized. and that Tyler Durden isnt the hero but a personification of the main character's deep insecurities, and that his snowflake speech is a dig at how fascists use dehumanizing language to breed loyalty from insecure people.
