The software costs nothing if you self-host, and they also offer a paid hosted option for people who prefer it.
Unlike Google Analytics, Matomo's data stays entirely on the site that uses it. No one else has access to it, so there's no way for it to be aggregated across many sites.

Great article from @jasonpjason on decentralising the internet and the successes and failures of federation. Suggests some new approaches and some policy support (but not a StateBook) are needed for decentralisation that actually empowers. Platform coops play a role. We need counterantidisintermediation to prevent platform lock-in. @adamk678 Yep. I made the pretty stupid decision to use my personal email for my newsletter. I thought it would be friendlier, but it just meant that when some people pressed 'spam' instead of 'unsubscribe' Outlook's filters put all future newsletters in spam. 🙄

I'd suggest *not* putting your email out there, and that it's worth paying for an alias as a protective layer.
