I'm in a privileged position that I can afford changing jobs at a whim. I can always find something to last me a while, in reasonably short time. Not that I want to, but if I would have to, I wouldn't be in trouble.

@liw The package is already in Debian, and in good hands too, in my opinion. But we can't have the latest-and-greatest in Debian stable officially, due to the bugfix-only policy. That's where a third-party repo comes into play: the latest version of the package for whatever distro release, independent of their update policy.

The company wouldn't mind me providing unofficial packages - a colleague does too, via OBS.

@stevelord They wouldn't. They explicitly said, publicly and otherwise, that they will not stop anyone from providing unofficial packages. A colleague has been doing so for the past few years (after I stopped). So in this regard, I'm fine. :)

@moritzheiber Not sure if it meets your criteria of sane configuration, but Apache2 supports TLS with Let's Encrypt kind of baked-in (via `mod_md`, since 2.4.33), http2, logging format can be customised, and the license is sane. It's also available on pretty much every Linux distro, and should be available for the BSDs as well in ports/pkgsrc.

On the other hand, even if it is easy to do, it is still not zero effort, and I have no direct benefit. In the past, I used to use the packages I made - but I no longer use syslog-ng.

Do I want to build & host these for others, just to spite our marketing department? Is it a good idea to commit to such maintainership, just out of spite?

But still unofficial packages, and kinda goes against the company goals. But is it wrong to go against company goals when those goals are stupid?

...what if I started to build and provide unofficial packages for every supported Debian and Ubuntu release, like I used to do some five years ago? I used to be the Debian maintainer for syslog-ng, the packaging is still largely mine. I can do this with very little effort, almost fully automated.

No registration wall, every Debian & Ubuntu release supported, high quality packaging.

I have a dilemma, a big one. The company I work for develops an open source syslog server (syslog-ng). Recently, "we" started to provide official Debian packages, but only for Debian Jessie, and hidden behind a registration wall and an API token. (There are unofficial packages for other releases, without a wall.)

Needless to say, I'm not happy about this. Neither the registration wall, nor only supporting oldstable. It's pretty much useless.

So I've been thinking...

@faxmodem This machine used to be my server (then bonehunter.rulez.org). It sat in a server room between May 2011 and December 2014, and replaced a DEC AlphaStation a friend hosted for me before. When I started to outgrow it, I took it back home, and migrated my domains to DigitalOcean VPSes.

At about 3 hours slept last night, my WPM - predictably - plummeted to 85-90WPM. Still happy I can stay awake for a full minute at a time!

So tired... I was looking at a piece of code, moved the cursor to highlight a block of text, copied it, went to another file, and wanted to paste it. That's when it dawned on me, that I dozed off before highlighting the text, and came back before wanting to paste it. I don't remember falling asleep though.

@iliana No clue about leg shaving, but I have dry skin too, and been shaving without gel for the past 20+ years. Conditioner does make sense to me, too. (Used to use it, now I just trim my beard and rarely shave, so for the little shaving I do, water's enough. That obviously isn't a legit method for one's legs.)

@phryk I'd consider it a compliment. "Full of good ideas, perhaps built on a not-so-great foundation, eclipsed by a pile of poo, but still having a faithful cult following." is about the best you can say with regards to politics, in my opinion. GNU/Hurd is like the young idealist, who never grew out of that stage - in a political context, that's a compliment.

@liw I'm using a combination of collectd (to collect info about a host), Riemann (to keep an index of the current state of the system), riemann-dash and potential-happiness (for a web-based and a terminal dashboard), and configured it to send me email when various values cross a threshold.

Works a bit differently than nagios and munin, but once I got used to it, I don't want to use anything else ever again.

And all javascript killed, too, so we're down a few notch too. Not much left to do now!

As for the trackball: no, I have not built it yet. Still playing with ideas, and gathering courage to start building.
