    @rugk @saxnot @aral Hey, can you
all take me off the mentions for this discussion? I'm not really interested and it's getting a bit fighty for a Sunday night

@aral I've never heard of POP OS, but I've been using Linux for quite a few years now, and in the past couple of years it's got to a point where I don't even notice I'm using Linux.

It used to be - oh, I wish I was on Windows because Illustrator, or whatever other piece of proprietary software.

Now, unless I wanted to play games (which I very rarely do), I can do everything my work throws at me on Debian and not really think about it.

The local NHS Trust just ran an ad on the radio saying "come down to our recruitment event, find out when on our website".

So, being in need of a financial boost, I looked at the web site. No events coming up at all.

NHS waste in action. Why pay Β£3,000 a month to run ads on commercial radio when there are no events coming up?

I'm glad it's not England getting a thrashing from a clinical, professional France in this World Cup Final. The unrest in England would be disastrous.

@ND3JR I don't know! I just use it to crop, resize and fix the colours on product images I'm posting online. I'm not much of a GIMP (har har)

@ND3JR It's one of those things, if you've been using it for years then common commands get into your muscle memory and you forget that there are three or four confusingly labelled options that don't quite do the thing.

I would report your confusion to the GIMP people, I am sure they are interested in how newer users perceive the UI.

@ND3JR You need to crop the image by using the rectangle select tool and then going to Image --> Crop to Selection

Then to resize the image go to Image --> Scale Image and choose the new size you want

@joshmillard You've probably heard of the legendary newspaper headline when Scottish football team Inverness Caledonian Thistle (commonly known as "Caley") beat Celtic:

Any ideas how well the fediverse does with screen readers? What's the blind user experience like?

@thamesynne It was an admirable attempt to take control of local broadband services out of the hands of BT and into the local councils, but ended up costing about Β£90 million and getting just a few hundred customers

@bobstechsite I used to have bog standard ADSL at around 12Mbps and it was fine.

But there was a physical problem with my copper line, crackling on voice and hours-long internet dropouts. A procession of engineers came out but always just plugged their gizmo in and told me how wonderfully perfect the line was.

I was paying for nothing, so eventually went to Virgin to get away from the crappy line that they wouldn't/couldn't fix.

@thamesynne Best uncontended connection I ever used was South Yorkshire Digital Region a few years ago. It's closed down now, but when I was on it I think I was the only user.

@thamesynne I think I might be the only Virgin user on the street, though. Looking at nearby wi-fi network names it's all BT and Sky and no VM.

@thamesynne I am on Virgin, which people often have a pop at for peak time speed decreases, but I pay for 100Mbps and get about 115Mbps even during the very peak of the evening demand.

Perhaps I am just lucky, but I've never had much of a speed problem.

Good article debunking all those "British broadband is worse than [insert random developing country]!" headlines:

    https://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/8110-uk-could-be-number-1-in-broadband-league-tables-rather-than-35th

Basically, they're saying that it's mainly down to our dodgy economic situation and people not finding faster broadband a priority when deciding on what to spend their shrinking wages.

The speeds are there, available, but people can't afford them or don't need them. I can get 350Mbps here, but why would I spend money on it?

Just had the annual reminder to add credit to my email account at Posteo.

Great privacy-respecting email provider from Germany, no ads, €1 euro a month. You can't use your own domain but you can have email @posteo.[your country] in most countries.

Reliable service and stays out of the way, the only time I have to do anything with it is when I pay my €12 euro each summer.

    https://posteo.de/en/ - highly recommended
