If you're using bash or zsh and you don't know the ^X^E shortcut, learn it now.

First, ensure you have a valid `EDITOR` environment variable set to your favourite editor (like vim or emacs).

Second, enter some command, but don't hit enter.

Third, use Ctrl+X Ctrl+E and learn that you can use your editor to modify the command before running it in the shell.

This is pretty helpful if you're trying to edit a long command line.

    #bash #zsh #linux #unix #macos #terminal

@clacke Everywhere that gets used on that TV show "Game of Thrones" tends to turn into a tourist trap hellhole. The island of Skye is really suffering from it - narrow rural roads clogged up with tourists all 'doing' the same few sights.

@clacke No, I live in England, it is just my name. I have been a few times to Iona as well as the other islands around there, though. I 've always tried to get up to the islands for some peace and quiet at least once a year.

In recent years, the north and west of Scotland have got a bit too busy, with things like the North Coast 500 and too many camper vans (RVs) so I've been visiting Ireland for quiet weeks, which seems to be a bit less overdone.

Anyway, voted for the only candidate who bothered to campaign in our area.

@clacke I often find that with Americans who come for a week in Britain. They have the idea that the place is tiny and they'll see it all in a week and can pop to Edinburgh from London for a day. I've convinced a few people over the years to extend their visits or cut their itineraries down, unless they enjoy seeing lots of British motorways or the inside of railway carriages.

Are there relatively low-cost places to stay in HK or Shenzhen, or is it a bit like London?

@maho @clacke Not at all. Bosses are 'wealth creators' and the judicial system is set up to keep them comfortable at any cost.

@devurandom Outrageous behaviour gets clicks, and clicks mean money. Twitter don't boot Trump because he brings in massive audiences.

The answer is to move away from corporate-owned platforms and onto platforms that don't rely on advertising to survive, like this one.

If things go well, eventually corporate social networks will wither and die and become echo chambers for idiots.

@clacke Didn't know you were in HK! (Why would I?) I order an awful lot of radio stuff from that part of the world to re-sell in this country, connectors and things.

I've always wanted to visit HK and Shenzhen to see in person the place where all my stuff comes from - it feels like you can probably get pretty much anything and it'd be super fascinating to see, coming from a place which is a lot more limited.

    Is it worth visiting?

@florian @clacke I used to work in an IT office where they had a loudspeaker which bellowed RED ALERT every minute.

Apparently, it used to bellow RED ALERT when there was a server down or some kind of critical failure, but some clever boss thought "if I set it to shout RED ALERT every minute it'll keep the staff on their toes".

    I lasted about three months.

@clacke I'm lucky where I live to have quiet wi-fi spectrum, but my parents' house is in a more affluent suburban area and more people have fancy wi-fi.

Debian with the iwlwifi drivers on my ThinkPad really struggles to connect there, and I can't figure out why because it works perfectly at home. You might be right in that it could well be a clogged-up 2.4GHz band.

Local election day in England today. If you are in one of the areas that's voting (mostly the main metropolitan districts, London boroughs and a few other bits) then make sure you vote!

Voting - for whoever you believe is the best for the job - is just as important locally as it is in national elections.*

    * unless you feel like voting UKIP in which case stay at home, it's scary out there, there are brown people /s
