I agree as well, Stallman talks are great if you are interested in the philosophy and the social, ethical and political aspects of Free Software. But I'm not sure if you will find the right arguments to teach companies about the economic values of Free Software. Therefore I would rather look at talks from Simon Phipps and other: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xup0HOyQy8U

@roka Yeah, I'm assuming it's kein deutsches Qualitätsgerät. Looks decent enough on the outside though, no obvious tolerance issues in the chassis mold or anything. :-)

Also I got this neat 5+1 USB A+C charger hub thrown in for a symbolic price. Perfect now that we're splitting up a bit for summer holidays.

I've been waffling on whether to get another one, but when it was less than 100 HKD I figured I'd be a fool not to buy it.

"Deutschmacht" is a decidedly weird and somewhat offensive name. :-)

I guess they mean "Deutschgemacht". But it isn't, it's a HK brand (Broadway's own?) and of course Chinagemacht like everything else. Here's hoping it doesn't eat any of my equipment.

Hmm, I'm not really liking the touchpad. The physical clicker feels clunky. But at least I finally figured out that two-finger click emulates right-click. And three-finger click is middle-click! Haven't used that for years.

Computer is now home. It's an ASUS VivoBook X542U and I'm super satisfied so far.

It was 4200 HKD, it has a DVD drive, everything works without proprietary drivers. Phone WiFi worked well in a less noisy radio environment. Speaker and microphone no issues. Ctrl key is to the left of Fn key.

I don't quite like that Ins is Fn+Del and that upper right is power rather than PgDn. The response in the keyboard keys is not amazing but pretty good for this price level. CPU is an i3 gen 7, but that doesn't really tell me anything. Sounds better than the Pentium that is in the rather lighter and slightly cheaper laptop that I didn't buy.

i feel like the idea of appointing governors and municipal leaders instead of electing them is actually even more insidious than you'd think.

when it comes to regular democracies, where do you get the best candidates for the top office? usually from people who have proven themselves capable regional politicians.

it's not just that there's "no one who can replace putin", as a lot of people say. it's that the current political system makes it way harder for one to come about.

@b What's your impression so far?

I have been using ubuntu-gnome until now, and I'm really happy to be getting the full mainline Ubuntu glitz without Unity, apart from some minor things. The WiFi selector was better in Ubuntu-Gnome 16.04 and I can't seem to find the preferences menu in nixpkgs terminator for some reason.

@ralph I don't know if rms is the right person to bridge that gap. I see him more as someone you can enjoy learning from once you're already in the camp.

@linuxsocist @vertigo @h @jjg Sounds like https://github.com/shlevy/nixos-riscv-bootstrap is even able to get a NixOS VM image that runs busybox in a RISC-V qemu system.

@vertigo @linuxsocist @h @jjg HPC eh? I guess this is where I should jump in and provide information about Nix status for RISC-V. :-)

    *surf surf*

    Apparently GitHub now has projects!

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/projects/15 is the riscv project for nixpkgs.

    Done:

    > Cross-compiled riscv64 kernel
    > RISC-V cross-compilation toolchain
    > Initial cross-compilation support for RISC-V
    > Build riscv qemu port

So not done yet as a native platform, I guess? But shlevy (who made all of the above) seems to be working hard on making RISC-V working. I've seen traces of their work here and there in nixpkgs, as they de-x86-ify and remove other assumptions from various packages and package infrastructure.

@jjg @LinuxSocist @h Artix 7 series, or Zynq 7 series chips are known to work, iirc.
