Been thinking more and more seriously about building a Medium clone frontend that just sits on top of Pleroma.

Not sure it supports the Article type yet, though, and I'm uncertain as to what would need to happen to implement that. But I would switch away from Medium in a heartbeat.

    > On October 12, 2015, Dell Inc. announced that it would acquire EMC in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $67 billion—the largest-ever acquisition in the technology industry.

Wow, and I never even heard of EMC.

They are the majority or full owners of VMWare and RSA, and are apparently huge in the enterprise data storage sector, and also "ranked no. 2 on Fortune's list of the World’s Most Admired Computer Companies for the fifth consecutive year" in 2015.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_EMC

Apparently EMC bought Likewise back in 2011. We used Likewise way back around 2000 for AD integration, because at the time it was a real turnkey solution that Just Worked, whereas Samba required more effort and had some issues.

The rabbit hole started at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12621063 :

    > The ones who didn't want the GPLv3 (Apple) either wrote their own or purchased a proprietary third party server such as Likewise and were left holding a flaming bag of shit when EMC purchased the Likewise codebase and cancelled all existing support contracts.

@xj9 @delores @lain Part of the trick is to just Write Less Code. But that takes a lot of effort. OpenBSD people make that effort.

@notclacke @delores So they do, or at least did, go hand in hand. As gcc improves and makes use of the leeway it's supposed to have, Linux needs to catch up and improve its compliance. Warnings turn to errors, undefined behaviors change, etc.

By the time gcc 4 came out, Linux finally could compile on gcc 3, but of course not on gcc 4. I just found a forum post that said 2.4.27 compiled with 3 but not with 4.1. I think Red Hat kept 2.95.1 around (not even 2.95.2) for Linux for quite a while, just like they had done with 2.7.2 before.

Linux is far from the only program to be written in semi-compliant C. Nix builds packages with clang, gcc 7, gcc 6 or gcc 5, depending on what works for each particular piece of software.
