"...when the social economy is obliged to coexist with capitalism, as it is today, the game is rigged. The logic of capital, which devours everything, drives it to crush or trivialize any alternative experience that is not comprehensive. Social economy must operate in a framework of postcapitalist transition." - Emilio Santiago Muiño
Here’s a survey about the social network #Mastodon. You are invited to take part regardless of your level of involvement or how often you use it or how long you've been here.
"Have you ever noticed how online accounts are incredibly easy to sign up for, but can be hair-pullingly difficult to close? Sometimes the Close Account option is right where you’d think it would be, but other times you have to hunt it down, clicking through menu after menu until you finally find out that you can’t close it online, you actually have to call.
There’s a name for this phenomenon—dark patterns."
Learned today that google scans receipts sent to gmail addresses to identify all your purchases (and shows users) see https://myaccount.google.com/purchases if you use gmail
I notice that for all the benefits of open social coversation, I've built a habit of *not* sharing thoughts because I feel so necessarily defensive and cautious about doing it on the surveillance capitalist platforms.
It will take some effort to figure out the appropriate comfort level for posting here.
This is probably good for Google et al, and for usability, but it's not great for actually owning your data. Who interoperates with who, and how, will be very significant. More at:
Minimalism gone wrong: "I don't know how to use your website anymore, you removed all the features that we actually used and now there's nothing to do here"
Yeah it's all about compromises. The rate I quoted is not standard, but can be achieved my monitoring "error fares" (usually a bug in a flight booking engine, or sometimes airlines dumping unsellable seats, see https://hacktheflight.net) or going with low-cost airlines (ie. pay extra for luggage, and bring your own food/drinks on board) like https://www.norwegian.com/
The Librem 5 should support @matrix IM at launch. @Purism works with the @gnome community to split Fractal into two apps: - GNOME Messages (for individual or small groups conversations, either through Matrix or SMS) - GNOME Conversations (for larger channels)
There also is a PoC application being worked on in case E2EE is not supported in GNOME Messages/Conversations by the phone launch.
Other protocols (e.g. Signal) likely won't make it to GNOME Messages, at least initially.
@DenubisX@dartigen yeah I've always wanted to do that, but when I looked into it seems difficult and surprisingly expensive (unless you have insider contacts). I usually fly across the Atlantic and back for about $400 BTW
