If ProtonMail were to finally release the source code for all its clients and bridge under libre licenses, I'd start an a paying account right now
@h thanks! weirdly Beaker browser is crashing every time I try to download it
@h and what about sharing the resulting font?
Regarding Apple's San Francisco font licence terms...
By way of an example, reading an OpenType font face into main memory using FontForge, modifying the image of the glyph for the number zero to get a slashed zero, and then generating an SVG font from that isn't illegal in my jurisdiction. https://social.coop/media/rfX_BM8yUhz6yeHjXD0
About to watch from #HOPE "Tech Warrior Camp at #StandingRock: Lessons for Keeping the Lights On" live feed: https://hope.net/booth.html
Problems we are having with #Signal:
* It is and will remain centralized (clear strategy of *not* federating servers)
* It requires strong identifiers/selectors (phone#) to use
* Author disallows distribution by anyone but Google, although free/libre
* It keeps pushing away verification of fingerprint in interface
* It relies on Google+Amazon infrastructure
* Its funding is shady (OTF = Radio Free Asia = USG)
= clearly unethical choices, unjustifiable by accessibility or technological reasons.
Heading to #HopeConf. You can access the stream from here https://www.hope.net/stream.html
Apple's San Francisco "free" font download is a work of art. Not because of the quality of the typography but because of the intellectual property engineering they've devised, comparable to the pyramids of Gizah to make it impossible to use in systems other than Apple's. Curiously, I may be able to reverse engineer it under the law of the jurisdiction where I live.
Here's a taster of what people can expect at OPEN 2018 next week - Toot Toot! https://open.coop/2018/07/19/open-2018-preview/ #opencoop #platformcoop #opensource #p2p
@mike_hales I haven't read the piece yet, but knowing blockchain people and how they think, I completely agree with your sentiment.
What d'you make of this

Blockchain+machine learning+Orstrom commons principles
I would love to feel happier with this radical stuff - but persistent talk of markets moneys and contracts just gives me the willies! Commons are not markets and coins+algorithms are not = empathy & humane vision? There will be great tools to build here. But first, dump this money/gaming/rule-following shit and place clever machinery firmly within circuits of wise heart & mindful awareness?
A message from "the elders of the internet" :D

They prescribe blocklists, whisky, and abstention from social media, but sadly no migration away from centralised corporate platforms...
The Documenting the Now project (which I've been lucky to be a part of) published its ethics white paper today about archiving social media in times of protest.

The findings in short are:
Draft paper on the concept of *decentralization*. I'd love your feedback. https://share.mayfirst.org/s/PqscGDDicwpZ34Z
Loading common web pages without ad/tracking blocking (including browser-level tracking protection) and watching the network tab is honestly a surreal experience. Like observing a malignant force that wants to consume you, the consumer.
"We find ourselves in a stage of history in which technical progress has prodigiously multiplied human productivity. We now have available to us the means to fully satisfy our aspirations. If those aspirations remain unsatisfied for the immense majority, it is not for lack of means, but due to a defective social organization that no longer corresponds to the level of the technical means in our possession."
@iona Just to say, I am sad if #SocialCoop doesn't fit that bill for you.
The next much needed step is #federation. #Tutanota and #Protonmail need to be able to send each other automatically-encrypted messages. Same with any user of #GPG.
