I've been trying out #Matrix the past couple of days: 'An open network for secure, decentralized communication'.

It's kinda like the Mastodon of messengers, or more accurately the fediverse of messengers, although calling it a #messenger is a bit of an understatement.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think it's great! A much needed solution to an increasing problem, not sure why I held of from checking it out for so long! 😅

    They're also on #Mastodon: @matrix 👍

If you're in NYC and want to learn the command line, come take my class! It's beginner/intro-level, no experience is a plus. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/intro-to-command-line-tickets-52911028310

      Intro to Command Line
      from Eventbrite
If you've ever tried to use a Raspberry Pi in one of your projects, or put a webpage on the web, you've probably run into the command line. This interface, that has barely changed since the 70's, is still going strong because it allows you to efficiently control a remote computer like a Pi or Amazon instance.  It also gives you a window into the inner workings of your own computer, allowing you to make changes and fixes that aren't possible through apps and GUIs.  Plus, it totally makes you look like a 1337 H4x0r while working on your laptop at the coffee shop. This class will be a no-experience-necessary gentle introduction that will help you learn all the most important commands, while practicing using them on a remote machine. Topics will include: - configuring your shell - navigating the filesystem - your new favorite commands - file permissions and root - remote logins with ssh and file transfer with scp - just enough git commands to be dangerous Be sure to bring your laptop to class. This class will be taught by NYC Resistor members Holly Hudson and Jonathan Dahan. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/. Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.

And Sterling sits so deep in layers of cynical irony that he makes Doug Coupland look like Mister Rogers, basically all the time. So, it's easy to project an end of history narrative onto things he does -- up until he writes something like Pirate Utopia, which pulls the same trick on the post-WWI melting pot of radical ideologies.

    Hello!

I've joined this instance because I'm an ARPA member on the SDF. I also keep a few back-up identities on other instances too.

I'm curious about gopher, Mastodon, OSS, Linux, Emacs, Org-mode,
tabletop RPGs, philosophy, history, and programming. I'm known to
    fiddle with Python on occasion.

If you want to chat, ping me!

More States Introduce Right to Repair Legislation
      By Julia Bluff from iFixit
2017 could be a very good year for repair. More US states than ever are proposing Right to Repair legislation this year. So far, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Nebraska, Kansas, and Wyoming have all introduced versions of the pro-repair bill in their legislatures—and more states could follow suit. If passed, the laws would make it easier for consumers and independently-owned repair shops to fix far more products.

Hi there! I'm a professor and researcher at UMass Amherst. I study media circulation from a sociological perspective, looking at media distribution networks as socio-technical systems that influence who has access to cultural resources and on what terms. I'm also an #Emacs user, #Arch Linux enthusiast, and generally curious person. I look forward to meeting more of you here! #introductions
