I believe the library as an institution is facing obsolescence or at least facing massive change in the way it works into a back-office affair with the front-office being a website. Book delivery is often a thing libraries do now. This change has its pros and cons of course, although I mostly approve of it. Some might resist the change, but progress and technology pushes resistance out of the way.

I believe the public park is the most direct replacement, with more indoor spaces.

Apparently the newest take for the library's inexorable decline is "please keep it open for the homeless." Why not open a shelter?

Many libraries (most of the ones I've been to) actively remove the homeless.

Hacks are NEVER EVER desirable elements of the system, especially when those hacks are vulnerable to trends or bureaucratic apathy.

Instead, shouldn't we make things that are built for purpose with compassionate purpose?

@cypnk that doesn't change the sad reality that people are turning to ebooks nowadays and using libraries less, and many libraries often remove the homeless
