Smart home technology, except it all runs on a local server and doesn't need to connect to the Internet unless I explicitly want it to do so (for things like getting the weather and playing music, I guess).

It does my heart good to know that this is published in a peer reviewed medical journal

@DissidentKitty I know. It's awful. As a non-American is there even anything I can meaningfully do to help oppose this?

@DissidentKitty Holy shit what the fuck?!
For added vileness, they make it also apply to emancipated minors who are, for most legal purposes, able to advocate on their own behalf as if they are adults.

@msh I've seen a few single-stud mounts, that should work in theory, though I wonder if it TV what actually fold flat against the wall when not in use. More research is needed, I think.
My TV is about 8 years old, so I don't know if it's as light as the new ones, but it'd probably still fit. I need to actually weight it and/or find the spec sheet.

@msh Hmm, maybe it's doable after all.

@keithzg @ShaunBartone @keithzg BTW, I solved the problem in the end, with some basic googling. I had to create a new home directory, because I'd somehow disappeared the old one (or possibly changed ownership so that it now belongs to root, but I didn't realize that was a possibility until after I created the new one, so I'm not sure...I may investigate more thoroughly later).

Trying to research TV wall mounts to put a TV in a corner (where the only stud is in the corner itself, not the main wall). This is proving difficult. Maybe I should just rearrange the furniture and use a TV stand, instead.

@ShaunBartone I'm somewhat familiar with Linux already, having used it for a couple of years now. I'm used to Lubuntu, which is based on Ubuntu, which is itself based on Debian, which is what the Pinebook Pro uses.
So...I have to learn new stuff (and mostly it's fun for me, but occasionally frustrating), but it's not totally foreign at this point.

@ink_slinger So this highlights the one issue with Pinebook that I did not foresee: having to learn a whole new operating system. Maybe I should just stick with Apple products.

@feld So Au Pied de Cochon is a restaurant in Montreal, which also has a sugar shack that operates during the spring when the maple trees are flowing.
I think those are all real recipes that they serve at the restaurant (or have served in the past).
The erotica part, though, that's just Montreal being Montreal, I think.

@feld Beaver tail is not contemporary Canadian food (unless you're talking about the doughnut-type things which are basically our version of elephant ears), but I can definitely believe it was a real thing that would have been eaten during the fur trading era (which would be pre-Confederation, but whatever).

@feld Very strange. Though, some of the recipes looks they make actual food (wtf is with the hare one, though?)...so...avant garde art cookbook?

@007 But actually.
My friend was telling me that his parents' new car has lane/cruise control that is basically semi-autonomous when on the highway and it keeps his mom from speeding and also keeps his dad from driving 15 km/h under the speed limit like he would normally do. It's a win for everyone.

It's not much, but it's a step in the right direction and hopefully I can make sure my kid will be an ally instead of a bully as she grows up.

Between those books and some conversations with her, we've got her to the point where instead of being a bully she's actually picked out some dresses she no longer wears to give to him as a gift. We ran it by his mom, first, over text & she said he loved all the options our daughter had picked out. Today, she's giving them to his mom and maybe he'll feel comfortable wearing dresses at school again, knowing there is at least one other kid who is OK with it. 2/x

There's a kid at my daugher's daycare who is a boy who likes to wear dresses. His mom suspects he may identify as a girl in the future, but he currently doesn't.
Anyway, he was picked on for wearing dresses. The daycare brought in books like The Boy Princess and Jacob's New Dress to read to the kids.
My kid may have been one of the bullies (she denies it, but I suspect she was). So I got some books from the library similar to those above.
