Finished reading Logan's Run. Decent ending with a twist that seems simultaneously obvious and totally nonsensical.

Not a masterpiece, by any means, but it's a fun read. The writing is quick and punchy, so it's a quick read and less than 200 pages. I'm actually kind of curious about the sequel now.

@FssOfDeath @mpjgregoire Now, modern conservatism often seems to just be "whatever triggers the libs" rather than a coherent ideology, so many on the right don't seem to care much about the environment (or they prioritize the economy, which in Canada definitely means supporting the fossil fuel industry). But that doesn't mean rightwing environmentalism is impossible.

@FssOfDeath @mpjgregoire Environmentalism isn't an inherently leftist position, I don't think. Many Green party founders are former PC members. Mulroney, though obviously not a Green, was pretty pro-environment and Conservatives in the 80s were often in favour of environmental conservation. Nixon created the EPA, for example.

@FssOfDeath Implying that Logan's Run (the novel) is a masterpiece is a spicy take. The movie changes the plot a fair bit, tbh. They mostly took the core concept and then told a different story, so I'm OK with the changes. Lastday being at 30 seems more plausible and fits with the "Don't trust anyone over 30" thing that was very much a part of the 60s/70s counterculture.

Maybe I'd feel differently if I'd read the book before seeing the movie, though.

the other day I was walking along a street full of shops and a guy next to me was LOUDLY UNREASONABLY SHITTY about the fact that the bus brakes squeaked.

"ow, my ears" is FINE, but he was off on a rant against public transportation, but in a nasty way, like These People can't maintain their city...

"It's the bus, be nice" I yell back, because he had an audience of only his young school age child, so he clearly was angling for a response from anyone else

The kid gave me the HUGEST longest smile as they walked away, confirming my hypothesis that you can realize your parent is an asshole from a young age, and you just want someone bigger than them to scold them, cos you can't.

I crave the day coming when he imitates "be nice" in my tone to his dad. I hope he turns out kind somehow.

@ItsTheManOnTheMoon @RexfordGTugwell I didn't know there was a TV series. Looking it up now, the basic premise sounds like a mashup of the movie and the book, plus elements that didn't appear in either. Could be entertaining, though probably pretty cheesy.

Apparently, one of the book's co-authors wrote a couple of sequels to capitalize on the success of the movie. The second book sounds decent, though not great. The third one sounds like a weird rewrite of the first book.

Nearly finished Logan's Run and it's sort of quaint in its Malthusian doom. In 2000 (of course called "the year 2000," as was the style at the time), there is a crisis due to the world population rapidly approaching 6 billion (lol). There are global food shortages, but the young people don't like the forced birth control and eugenics measures, so they rebel and take over all world governments. Eventually, by 2072, no one over 21 is alive and the whole "Lastday" thing is in effect worldwide.

@adasauce I, on the other hand, have the absolute worst Conservative MP who has managed to fail upwards because people here will elect a rock with a CPC sticker on it. He's lazy, ineffective and quite possibly a racist. But, hey, he's on the right team. 🤦♂️

New evidence suggests the T-Rex may have hunted in female-led packs.

Just imagine that. The T-Red wasn't a lone hunter (or scavenger). It was a pack animal!

@highlandwolland Is this sort of weird propaganda normal in American schools? I never recall having to do stuff like this in school (I live in Canada).

Does your urban homestead include a woodburning stove? Are your arms too ripped from chopping wood? How about giving your legs a chance to get pumped?

@interneteh @erinbee Depending where you live, there might also be some sort of government surplus store/website.

In addition to office furniture, they often have fun stuff like decommissioned ambulances (I was briefly tempted to buy one to try and convert it to a camper van, but they typically have a lot of miles on them before they're sold off).

@adasauce I find the Vote Compass typically makes me appear more moderate than I actually am, because of the way the questions are weighted and how the parties self-identify. Last federal election, it said I was most aligned with the Liberals even though that was, uh, not true.
