@shmibs Collecting this stuff is one of these 30+ man hobbies, like model trains used to be. The monetary aspect is easy to talk yourself into, as these things are valuable and the expectation is that they will keep being valuable into the future, it's easy to convince yourself you'll at least break even if you need to divest yourself from them. Of course, one needs to keep an eye on the market, because model trains is a cautionary tale; these kind of hobby collections appreciate in value until suddenly the entire generation who cared starts dying or loses interest, then it drops to almost zero value.
But anyway, getting rid of it is because getting them was usually assuming things about my personal future: a) I will have more free time in the future to mess with these, b) I will have space in the future to keep them out of boxes where they won't be in the way, c) they won't be a major pain in the ass to move to a new place.
In my case, a) and b) were kind of based on the expectation that I would remain single, so the outlook on those has changed. a) is unlikely to be true until retirement, and b) for 5-10 years.

@Moon I just don't understand why they exist. Hershey's chocolate is okay for "candy bar" grade chocolate, which is fine in a candy bar, but a bar that's just that chocolate with their name proeminently on it, as if it was chocolate they were really proud of... Why? Have they not compared themselves to the competition?
-
@wowaname TBH, the N64 is the console I like the least out of all the ones I've collected. It's the only one I've not bothered acquiring a way to play backups on.
-
@coolboymew The "Buffalo" sauce that was clearly Frank's Red Hot? Yeah, the last time I went they didn't have it, they offered me "Creamy Sriracha" instead, but it's not the same
-
@wowaname NES, SNES, N64, Genesis/Sega CD/32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2, GB, GB Micro
NES, SNES, Genesis, GB Micro would come with Everdrives, PSX is chipped, Saturn would come with a Pseudo-Saturn cart
-
Honestly, the MiSTer (and for portable play, the Miyoo Mini) is more than good enough to replace the need to take out any of the consoles to play them. My NES, SNES, Genesis/Sega CD/32X are all redundant from that perspective. The PSX increasingly so as the PSX core just got good enough to get a first official release. The Saturn core is moving along too, with unofficial pre-alpha builds floating around. N64, Dreamcast and PS2 are unlikely to ever be on the current MiSTer hardware, and are not yet trivially emulated, so I probably should keep those.
In the new bedroom I wanna make a little "retro" setup using my PVM and the C64 and maybe one console hooked up, but I'm struggling to decide which I should keep. NES is the one I have more nostagia for, maybe that'd be the one I'd keep.
-
On top of the computers, I'm also struggling with whether I should keep my retro consoles.
-
@beardalaxy If I include the external (music) keyboard, yeah, shipping would be too much to go back and forth. Without it, it would be possible, but it'd be missing part of the appeal
-
It turns out that 9600 baud is a bit slow for full screen ncurses/TUI software, and it messed up refreshing the screen in lynx and weechat. Maybe it was my C64 terminal emulator software, I was using Striketerm 2014. CCGMS has been getting more development, maybe that works better now.
-
I also need to be looking for a new home for my Osborne 1, I accomplished the "target" I had set for myself for it. I don't know if I'll get a good offer for it without shipping though, and this thing is unshippable.
I think the only retro computers I'd want to keep are the C64 and the Vic-20. I got the C64 accessorized enough that it's pretty usable and fun computer to use, and I'd like as a project to set up permanently a rpi with a BBS that I can use as a gateway to the Internet for it. I already had that partly set up a while back but it had some bugs.
-
@tk Then it wouldn't be getting out of our apartment, defeating the purpose
-
I should probably start thinking of getting rid of my CX5M. It was a cool computer to play with for a while, but gaming wise an MSX1 is very limited, and the synth aspect doesn't appeal to me like it did when I got it (I had a Yamaha DX7 I could program with the CX5M when I got it; no longer).
I'm torn though between selling and maybe donating to a Youtuber who'd showcase it. I'm sure 8-Bit Guy would want to show off the thing; it's right at the intersection of his synth and 8-bit computer interests.
-
@bajax @Moon @EmmaFaber @graf I often end up selling things for less than I could get, but that's because I'm not smart, I value keeping them over whatever others would pay me for them, until they get in the way and I need to get rid of them quickly and don't have the luxury to wait for a good offer anymore.

@Mitsu @helene @solidsanek New fedi meta just dropped

Yesterday, we had Mitsu eat lobster for the first time. I think we scored points in favor of Quebecois cuisine there
