@dirb @rye .... fuck.

@maiyannah yes. and as one of the those people who'd be classified as DSPS in some locales (one hop removed from non-24), the choice of blue LEDs is esp uncool to my literal eyes. as you say, too many lights on at all hours: it screws us up, it screws up our ecology, it is colossal a waste of energy in aggregate, and it deprives the majority of the population of the world's celestial grandeur.
I see nothing good about having too many lights on all the time, inside or outside.

to oxford comma, or not to oxford comma? that is the question ...

@ktsukik Not in Employment, Education or Training.

@wakarimasen this.

@maiyannah the psychology driving excessive night time lighting (both indoor and outdoor) is one I really can't quite fathom. the world is a scary place, yes, but I don't think fighting the literal dark changes that one bit. having the sun on 24/7 might be comforting for some, but not for me.
random aside, I grew up near a large city, actually, and didn't see the milky way until I was almost legally an adult. now that I'm quite removed from that, I can see the milky way on any clear night and wouldn't want it any other way. the downside is that I still have a lot of trouble picking out basic constellations in a literal sea of stars. but maybe "downside" isn't the right word for it ... "awe" is more fitting.
I think the cause of the International Dark Sky Association is one I could get behind if I weren't already immersed with birds.

@mcscx yes!! some of those soviet PDP-11 clones always fascinated me, and I hope to try one someday. (PDP-11 assembly language is considered by old Forth fans as being consistent enough to write a very terse assembler for.)
random fact: my calculator was manufactured in Ukraine August 1990, so one of the later models with the dark grey face and light grey chassis. The MK-61 is easier to find in immaculate condition for not much money, and is functionally identical to the 52 except for the expansion slots. @kamiyajing

@maiyannah Really tacky, indeed. But a lot of people seem to think it looks "cool." irdgi. I feel like I spend more time than I ought to carefully cutting small pieces of electrical tape so my eyes don't take the brunt of this light pollution in a dark room.
I'm esp not a fan of the power LEDs on the bezel of some computer displays. In some cases, the stray light is evident at the edge of the actual picture. :-P

@mike a cheap shot, apologies. looks very cute tbh.

@mike the rats are eating your bird seed, again?
-
@cybermeow back to your original point: absolutely!

@mcscx @kamiyajing those early HPs are pretty great, though. I wish I had one. I've an old Russian RPN I like very much, but have to replace the foam used to "debounce" the buttons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elektronika_MK-52

@mcscx @kamiyajing the repo has software emulators for several platforms. even though I have the hardware, it's super nice to also have a "desktop" calculator on my computer that operates identically. I think this project did a really great job with this.
-
@dolus I should have noticed the origami-esque feel right away. thanks for pointing that out. I think that's prob exactly what was intended.

@roka @hakui @shpuld when it gets too strong, I usually put it on ice.

@cybermeow agree esp on that last point. if there's one common failing I see as hallmark to online communication, it's a failing in basic empathy. we're honestly doomed without it imo, no matter what words we choose.
