interesting. IIUC, this should be easy (but perhaps dangerous) to test by inhaling a couple of times from a helium balloon, and exhaling to the atmosphere. you won't get oxygen in, but you will get CO_2 out. breathing helium in would presumably enable the lungs to get CO_2 out of the blood stream, lowering the urge to breathe even as no oxygen takes its place in hemoglobin. but how does that work, chemically? would the CO_2 really move from blood to lung "air" without being replaced by O_2? this probably wouldn't be testable otherwise, but what would hemoglobin bind to? curious...

I recall noticing, when I was 16 or 17, that the mass of a neutron was about the same as that of a proton plus an electron, and then writing a "paper" proposing a theory that a neutron was no more than proton with an electron, so that electrical charges canceled out, the masses added up, and electromagnetic forces bound them together. in a nucleus, electrons would "orbit" the protons in such a way as to bind them together, since the distance between a proton and its neighbor proton would be at least twice as much as their distances to the electron, so the repulsion would be much smaller than the attraction. I didn't have the maths to express that as quantum mechanics, wave functions and whatnot, but it looked like a beautiful simplifying theory to me back then

I've always thought it had to do with ergonomics. reaching for e.g. qwer or even 1234 from the rest position asdf would put more strain in the fingers without the slight shift that makes it more of of a side motion. compare the strain of reaching from f to 5 to that of reaching for the 6 with the same finger. if the keys were like a typematrix, the 5 would be where the 6 is. it doesn't feel comfortable to me.

now, that thinking doesn't seem to apply to the right hand, so maybe it is mostly legacy of mechanical typewriters after all

I guess better ergonomics could be achieved by positioning keys in curved lines, so that the rest position had all fingers equally rested, something like asdc instead of asdf, rather than horizontal lines of keys. but transitioning to such a different layout might be a pain for touch-typists. at this point, it probably makes more sense to leave us alone with our weird ways, and think of ways to improve the far more widespread thumb-typing

with blob-ridden linux, nonfree video drivers and accelerators in kernel and userland, and drm-infested programs, they will be somewhat better off than a fully proprietary system, but still a long way from achieving freedom, and thus vulnerable to the whims of those who control the proprietary software they depend on, and dependent on those masters to fix problems they might encounter, more so if they choose to take further steps towards freedom :-(

what an ignorant thing for him to say
everybody who understands the matter knows that vaccines are not cloaks of invulnerability. no vaccine offers 100% protection. when it comes to covid-19, it lowers the risks of contracting and spreading the virus and, in case you get infected, it lowers the risks of evolving to a serious case or to death.
part of the problem we have now is that people are being misled into dropping other defenses after taking the vaccine. that's as ignorant as refusing to take the vaccine, and almost as dangerous. the vaccines are quite effective, but not effective enough as to render other containment measures useless. please take your shots, and keep on wearing masks, keeping a safe distance, and avoiding crowded places

what is "funny" is that, despite the insistence on the propaganda label "IP", these regressive changes are not promoted through WIPO's optional agreements, but rather through WTO's do-it-or-else rules

"acepipes" me lembrou de umas linhas hilárias do LF Veríssimo
    adoro LFV
