Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Friday, 21-Dec-2018 09:40:53 EST Mark Shane Hayden @liw it is a difficult way to learn a lesson. People can get blinded by the fact such people "get things done" but once they are finally gone:
1. You see how much of a barrier they are to enabling OTHER contributors to get things done, and
2. Customers/users are too intimidated to report that certain important things get done, so they don't get done and the project stagnates.
This is applicable to any collaborative situation and a big reason big tech has gotten so terrible lately.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Friday, 21-Dec-2018 09:29:31 EST Mark Shane Hayden @liw Indeed the longer you let a "rock star" behave badly whilst continuing to become more indispensable the worse the problem becomes and the more disruptive it can be to resolve the situation.
I've experienced this myself when I was 5 months into a job and my employer's badly behaving rock star of many years finally left the company. Not only did I have to figure out his poorly documented "clever" implementations, I had to face the fallout of his behaviour and his attempts to steal customers!

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Thursday, 20-Dec-2018 13:42:48 EST Mark Shane Hayden @mike ... the other challenge is probably the one that needs more work: making the creation of federated personal websites and blogs more accessible. Being HTML-literate shouldn't be required, and ease-of-use should not need to come with feature and code bloat. Like, right now we have some nice lightweight blogging systems that are not easy to initially set up, and we have WordPress... quite easy to set up but quite bloated.
But I am encouraged by progress made in the past few years.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Thursday, 20-Dec-2018 13:35:09 EST Mark Shane Hayden @mike I think the big algorithm-driven silo sites have us conditioned to place too much importance on discoverability. Although federated platforms have been criticized for not having the discoverability of big central services I have not had any problem finding and following people I am interested in from a self hosted instance without the use of relays.
Activitypub seems like the evolution of Atom/RSS by bringing in more interactivity, which enables sufficient organic discoverability...

Obviously the potential is there for both great good and horrible evil...
