@djsundog hey all you young 'uns gather 'round and let me show you how you clicked on banner ads before there was a world wide web!
As in Virtual *Public* Network :blobcheeky:
You know, like the ones that sponsor Linus Sebastian's YouTube channel that people use to get American Netflix!
@jonw this is the best analogy really.
How trustworthy is your VPN? Public VPN services should be trusted about as much as the Wi-Fi in a cafe or hotel.
@thatgeoguy those in the C-Suite can have remarkably limited vision, even if they might have genuinely good intentions. Lots of assumptions are made when a person has lives so long as a financially secure white man living in a nice house and surrounded by family.
I know it isn't even close to the same but you can be part of the fediverse family!
Or...not...😬 🤣
So I occasionally get garbage user accounts being created by spambots that are never confirmed, presumably because they don't have access to the email address that the confirmation link was sent to. I try to delete these on a regular basis.
Except that for each unconfirmed user deleted THOUSANDS of "delete actor" tasks are created to notify the whole known fediverse of the user deletion. WHY?? Unconfirmed users should NEVER be known outside the local instance right?
...only mum can visit by appointment only now. They're still figuring out the protocol but porters will be at every hospital entrance to sign in visitors and watch for anyone symptomatic and deny entry if they are. Thankfully I've got video chat worked out with him now.
In the meantime I've got VPN set up for my employer, telecommuting as required, messing with my masto instance, making stuff and going nowhere except to get groceries for now.
@thegibson I'm doing ok.
Getting it together at least. The month started with my dad having a serious accident at his home, suffering a fractured skull, several cracked ribs and injuries to his right arm and leg. Then the following week COVID comes to town.
But it's much better now...after 3 weeks he has been moved out of trauma to rehab. Bittersweet because today was the last time I could visit to help him settle in. Starting at midnight hospital visits are nearly banned...
@Canageek that would fit right in with the Device Orchestra!

@jk I wonder if anyone has studied who is more ridiculous...HN or Quora
@ink_slinger holy crap! And your hosting provider hasn't providing info on what's going on?
@ink_slinger seems it's wise not to put too much trust in a Trudeau during a crisis
@gdkar The length tho...
Too long for pride, not quite long enough for John Cena
*sigh* Docker.
When will someone sink that ship already?
@cypnk Please sign me up for your mailing list.
I'm sticking with my 12 year old model until I find one of equivalent size that is sufficiently brainless. Even the display panels sold for commercial use have started to go all cloudy and shit in recent years.
@snowdusk_ @anondjdan automobile safety systems have improved so much over the years that the inspiration for a whole sub-genre of teen angst songs has virtually disappeared
How am I to fully enjoy this nice Chianti when the census has been cancelled and the grocery store has completely run out of fava beans?
@krruzic can't say for sure. I'm not familiar enough with pleroma to know if it would leverage GPUs for image and video processing. In the case of mastodon it seems to eat lots of memory for what it dies, and provisioning 4 vCPU cores instead of the initial 2 when I waa the only user helped with performance...and postgresql was actually fairly modest with resources relative to all the other moving parts.
@krruzic maybe transcoding? I know on Mastodon at least the most intensive part of posting media seems to be transcoding.
@lilithsaintcrow to me, raisins baked inside any sort of dough or batter is one step over the line 😒
