Lee Majors eat your heart out!
@thatgeoguy my parents lived through the second World War but didn't think there was anything really noteworthy about their lives at the time since they were just kids far from the front lines, not soldiers in battle.
But I think it was fascinating hearing about how they made do with rationing, hearing of friends, family and neighbors who were in battle, dad living near an internment camp and making friends with Japanese kids etc.
There's no way of knowing what people will find interesting!
@Mainebot @estoricru @djsundog
...not all independent establishments are bad of course. The independent diners and cafes are better than pubs/bars/nightclubs. The ones where owners are active managers are better. The ones owned by women are better.
But...we can't pretend it isn't a problem in Canada.
@Mainebot @estoricru @djsundog an ex of mine was a server for many years here in Alberta, initially at independent pubs and cafes, then in some major chains. I can say from what we saw that the problem is similar in Canada, though may be less severe.
Independent pubs/bars/nightclubs all across Canada have a bad record of wage theft and payroll tax evasion. They pull the same shit here. The chains are not perfect but much better...
@puzzled I'm puzzled too
@Canageek @KitRedgrave if we wanted to build a wall it sounds like there would be a surprisingly good chance we could get the Cheeto in Chief to pay for it
@tcql Speaking of mutual aid, who does one talk to for organising volunteers to provide them with a good Jitsi server.
Y'know, so that they can be liberated from digital landlords like FACEBOOK and zoom? :blobthinkingcool:
@stux this is why I'm allowed to have a cat, and I'm allowed to have a swimming pool, but I'm not allowed to have both at the same time.
@thatgeoguy @ink_slinger oops...Vice, not Wired...but the point still stands actually.
Anyways, Zoom is written and designed like malware. I would go anywhere near it myself.
@thatgeoguy @ink_slinger gotta say that listing being "open source" as a con for Jitsi is very strange. I guess it being an article for Wired that being a closed system managed by a well funded tech-bro startup instead is a virtue.
As you say, there are ample resources to get Jitsi set up right and it uses pretty standard tech. It is really the least-BS solution and you can set up a server under your full control in a snap. It's been excellent for my job so far!
What it says in my job description: dev-ops :blobsunglasses:
What I really do: dev-oops! :blobderpy:
@puzzled ...there is also a delete user "tootctl" command I can execute from a shell which I'll try early Saturday morning (like 2am early) on one of the unconfirmed users. If that method also does the same thing I'll raise an issue on the Mastodon github.
But aside from that expect stability to improve a lot...it was very solid for 2+ years before recent OS upgrades and performance tweaks!
@puzzled nope, just people who are wondering the same thing boosting my toot lol.
I don't get *too* many spammer signups, so I've just been suspending them through the web admin interface, which is what generates all those sidekiq tasks and caused the most recent service disruptions. I've tuned it to dual back concurrency and am not deleting any accounts right now and it's been running very well since (no errors at all for 24 hours, yay!), so I'll leave it alone for now...
@hasya23 here in the civilised world they tell us 2 metres is the appropriate social distance.
So...
Glenn Danzig is The New Metre™️
@colon_three owls be all like :blobglare: cuz they're wise and we're all so foolish
@thatgeoguy totally understand. I shouldn't make assumptions about CEOs either I suppose. Regardless it seems to be a challenge to widen the perspective.
I've been in the situation during holidays and such where I've been away/alone, and it's tough. This is tougher.
I'm trying to keep up my spirits too since I can't see dad in the hospital due to severe restrictions on visitation. He figured out how to video call me on his tablet today which cheered me up a bit though!
@jalcine MediaGoblin is the only one that comes to mind for me. It isn't abandoned, but it seems to be relatively inactive.
Still could be worthy of getting revived
The Children of the Corn II: Corn Teens
@craigmaloney @djsundog @esvrld I heard Amazon and Wal-Mart are hiring thousands of people these days. If landlords are having a hard time getting a job they are just lazy.
