Random #ServiceDog Story. On Saturday, random non-parishioner woman wanders into church with Akita-type dog. Plops down on a couch in the sanctuary annex, unplugs lamp, plugs in her phone charger, pets her dog while it chews one of our doorstops to pieces on the carpet.

“We have the opportunity to help explain the situation as more of an environmental problem—privacy is about me… but surveillance is about other people, especially more vulnerable people, and the ways in which they can be exploited or manipulated through the use of vast collections of data and algorithmic governance.”—Siva Vaidhyanathan
This particular problem is basis of my criticism of shadow/site banning in Mastodon. it would be nice to know whom you've lost touch with at the whims of admins. :-)
@PhoneBoy in a world of people with education, rather than schooling, Bill Gates would not have a software empire, and Obama would not have been elected. These things go hand in hand... :-)
@DrChris That was just southern democrats -- on the east coast, it was political machines like Tammany Hall that often started as, essentially, ethnic mafias. Those 19th century images of politicians buying votes with liquor? (You know, the reason the liquor store is closed on election day?) were political machine operations. Primarily associated with one particular party that isn't Republican.
@newt Much like "racist," "alt-right" is both a minimal category and an extremely sticky slur that requires no evidence in the community that responds to it.
@skypage@DrChris It takes a little practice, and yes, a little longer -- but you cannot get a closer shave. When i was a kid, I was told to practice with a straight razor on a rubber balloon covered with shave cream -- one i could get the cream off without popping the balloon -- I was considered checked out on the straight razor. You get better and a bit faster with time. :-)
