@xahlee I'm not sure I agree in an absolute sense, but I accept your point as principle. I suspect that there's a third factor, which is that readability of a given language (other factors aside) has to do with the person reading it and how they read it.

It'd be an interesting field for proper study... if you come across anything academic on it, do share!

@xahlee My argument is that it is relative to the programmer. A good programmer with disciplined style produces code that is readable and documented -- the best you can hope for for "aging."

You can elaborate all you like, I'm just speaking to my own experience with my own code.

I believe the argument hangs more heavily on the programmer's approach. Some languages may be somehow arbitrarily better at readability -- but the dealmaker/breaker is the coder.

@xahlee It provides adequate facilities for commenting, and again, one can write disciplined code in pretty much any language. One does not need to use all of the syntactic candy of the language;I find 20 year old C++ readable, and I also find 10-15 year old JS readable... at least, mine. :-)

If anything makes it difficult, it's that the language has changed such that when you're looking at the code X years from now, the question is: "what version is this? what engine is required to execute it?"

@xahlee depends on how you write and document it. I can still read _drivers_ I wrote in the 1990s (C++ CodeWarrior, classic MacOS). Javascript, likewise, can be written in a disciplined, documented way.

The question is what percentage of code needs to be readable after 3-4 years? Obviously, there is some (some of it quite critical and in for a ridiculously long life) -- but I suspect the average lifespan of a line of code these days is 18-24 months.

@SLRock The Olympic games are one of the my severe pet peeves. Any effort to fracture or end them -- most specifically to destroy the IOC / it's power or influence -- I'm in favor of. Doing regions would be a great start -- the baltic games -- and people could compete in the sports that are locally relevant and practiced by _actual_ amateurs, rather than the "non-professionals" raised in pens and shot up with steroids in the present "games."

@xahlee Flash a a pre-web thing -- it was a technology adapted to the web.

There's also that part that someone has to have the idea before the software can be written. Especially then, the open source community was more responsive than creative. A thing like Flash was the work of professional creatives with a tremendous amount of corporate support over a very long time -- not individual coders "scratching an itch."

The context defines creation, which is hard to recapture post-facto.
