reminder: if due process is revoked for one group -- illegal immigrants, for example -- it can be revoked for everyone. All the government has to do is say you're an illegal immigrant. You say, "but I'm not, and I can prove it" -- but prove it to who?? the government doesn't have to give you a chance to prove it, that's what revoking due process *means.*
But of course, most people who say it's okay to revoke illegal immigrants' due process are white. so.

@halcy the main thing that bugged me is the actions of the characters in the factions never made any sense. you could be totally against one character for 80% of the game and they'd still be like "hey you should come join our side, we would like that"

@gcupc there is serverless, and it's way more interesting than "serverless": actual peer-to-peer communication.
you know, the thing the Internet was actually created to be?

a movie about a tech consultant hired to finish skynet while the union strikes to kill the project. as they read and patch and polish the source, they only understand part of the system. they get inklings of what it is this tech does -- things not fundamentally different from palantir's tech, or ICE's, for whom the protag has also consulted. as it dawns on the viewer what this thing does, how it does it, and to what a brutal extent, the protag remains unaffected. this is what they do. it is what they have always done, and it has always taken care of them. each day a private train carries him underground to work, past the picket line where rubber bullets fly through protest signs.
then, of course, the machine turns on.

@emsenn @ajroach42 @djsundog I mean if you JUST want "a lightweight DIY laptop with a high-res display and a good battery" with as little fuss as possible, using an Android at the core would be way easier; all the manufacturing has had its supply chain optimized to hell and back. but then you're stuck with termux, which is pretty meh.
that's what I did with https://atreus.technomancy.us/deck ; it was easy to build but ultimately somewhat unsatisfying.

@emsenn @ajroach42 @djsundog yeah mega caveats on that last one: I don't know if they've actually shipped a product yet or if they're just taking pre-orders. the community is much smaller than the pi community (but on the other hand there's no broadcom NDA jankiness and it's 100% freely-licensed)

@emsenn @ajroach42 @djsundog I did just find that the CHIP design is being manufactured again: https://popcorncomputer.com/
the cool thing is it has onboard battery charging (with charge level visible to the OS which is super hard to get with the PI) plus enough pins to drive a super-cheap LCD; the pocketchip used it with a PSP display which are a dime a dozen on ebay.
basically designed from the ground up for the handheld use-case, whereas with the pi there are a lot of awkward missing bits.

@emsenn @ajroach42 @djsundog it means the pi is a lot less power-efficient than something like the CHIP, but since the company that made that went under, your best bet might just be to massively over-provision the battery and live with the inefficiency.
the 1W adafruit limitation is only a problem if you want to plug a lipoly in directly; if you use an off-the-shelf aux USB battery they usually have that circuitry integrated and with a higher current max.

@emsenn @ajroach42 @djsundog the pi 3 won't run on adafruit's battery circuit since it maxes out at 1W. When I tried it I had to fall back to the pi 2, and even that got less than an hour on the lipoly I had.
I've read that HDMI has a lot more overhead than LVDS because of the encoding/decoding process it needs to support the HDMI spec's DRM requirements.

I've been running firefox as my main browser for years, but I've always kept chromium around for a handful of semi-trusted sites where I knew ahead of time the "block all the scripts" setup I have in firefox would cause trouble and I didn't want to bother adding to the whitelist.
well, as of yesterday morning, chromium has been crashing on launch 100% of the time, so I think that's the nudge I finally needed to dump it completely.
