@sixohsix When you're throwing or firing things at a target, a backstop is a thing that catches or blocks any projectiles that miss or pass through the target. Like in a firearms shooting range, or a baseball practice area. In the case of Brexit I think this word is being used as a metaphor to indicate "last resort" - if they can't resolve the Irish border issue, the "backstop" will catch the unhandled cases.
@LWFlouisa If you also need to do things like provide low-level connectivity (a wireless access point but without providing access to the Net, or similar) then there may be several additional steps involved. But most of them are the same steps you'd follow for providing Net access, just with the change that you turn off IP forwarding and don't really provide Net access.
@LWFlouisa You give the laptop a private IP which the other device will connect to; if the other device is connecting on a separate interface from the laptop's internet connection, that's easiest. Turning off IP forwarding in Linux is "sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=0" There'll be a similar command for IPv6 if you care about that. I don't know how to do it under other OSes than Linux but it should be possible under almost any.
@LWFlouisa I don't understand what you mean by "be able to connect to a host from that laptop from another device." Do you mean connect the other device to a *server* running on the laptop (such as a file share or Web server), or connect to literally a *host* (meaning some third computer elsewhere)? Either is possible but the second is more complicated.
Assuming the first: it's fine, you just turn IP forwarding off (which may be the default configuration anyway).
maybe i should have a permanent Out Of Office Autoreply that says something like "thanks for your email, i might reply properly later, but at the moment the idea of replying to your email, and also the fact that i am supposed to, is ruining my day, and i'm not sure i have the emotional energy to work out a better way of saying this, go fuck yourself, i didn't mean that sorry, please don't ever send me anything ever again, i want a quiet life, please let me be in peace, let my soul rest, o hecky"
Working on the Boxers game again after a long hiatus. Re-did the counter sheets to make it easier to register the two sides. I put the project on the shelf for a while because in many trial plays I'd never seen the Allies win, which is a problem because that was the historical result; but last night while drunk and sad I had an idea for a way to tweak the simulation to make it easier for them without breaking the rest of it, so that's going into the next trial play.
@jk yeah and it's usually something like "a giant firebreathing turtle except if he turned into a girl" or "the sacred flame of the Athenian Prytaneum except if it turned into a girl"
@jk My late grandfather once saw a musical called "Chickens" at a small local theatre; as far as I can tell it was some kind of parody of "Cats," and it made a big impression because he talked about it for years afterward.
