@apexys This is one of the areas where we can already see the overly strong position of Google in webdev, HTML5 originally included a <input type="datetime"> element that would also handle timezones, but the Chrome developers said that's too much work and it was dropped from the standards and now we have datetime-local which explicitly disregards the timezone

@cosine It's not supported by IE/Edge yet (but it degrades gracefully), but otherwise it's pretty well supported so it's really nice

If "regular user" needs were indeed the main focus of free software the only free software project should be a spreadsheet program

@impiaaa I'm not a *huge* fan of tying everything to the "dumb regular user", not everything has to have maximum market share as its goal (i.e. niche or very topic-focused tools aren't any less valid Free Software)

Speaking of which, GNU Radio is maybe a more suitable example?

@impiaaa Depending on what you mean by backend, but e.g. pretty much the only decent format conversion tools are open-source (and have always been, like ffmpeg or mkvtoolnix)
