@joseph @Matter Good question! Its certainly a popular point of discussion, but I'm not sure if it's on the roadmap.

@ajroach42 If you're on LinkedIn, add "seeking new opportunities" to your headline. Also, under the Jobs section, there is a hidden variable you can set to let recruiters know you're searching.

@joseph Not quite that cut and dry. Instances don't sync your profile (so you can't just set up shop elsewhere, like a cloud backup), but they do sync your toots for a certain time period.

You have the ability to download your profile from your instance, but not the ability to upload it elsewhere at this point. So you don't necessarily lose your data, but you do lose your presence when an instance closes.

    Does that make sense?

    #introduction
I generate an hourly report based on the hashtags found in use across mastodon.social.

Although there are many hashtags in use across mastodon, the userbase is still small enough for 'trends' to occur infrequently (a trend being a single hashtag used more than once each hour). Most of the time this bot will instead generate a cloud of all encountered individual (single use) hashtags.

    Please note:
A single user tooting an identical tag multiple times does not constitute a trend.

Twitter sold data to Cambridge Analytica; data sales accounted for 13% of Twitter's revenue in 2017

Twitter sold data to Cambridge Analytica; data sales account for 13% of revenue
      By Ben Lovejoy from 9to5Mac

Facebook came under massive fire for first allowing Cambridge Analytica to hoover up user data from the platform, and second keeping quiet when it found out about it. But it turns out that Twitter has directly sold data to the company …

The news was revealed by the Telegraph over the weekend, and was confirmed by Twitter, which says that it has now banned ads by the company.

A Twitter spokesman confirmed the ban and said: “Twitter has also made the policy decision to off-board advertising from all accounts owned and operated by Cambridge Analytica. This decision is based on our determination that Cambridge Analytica operates using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices.

One difference, however, is that Facebook allowed the company to collect data users would have expected to be available only to their Facebook friends; Twitter data is almost all publicly available. There is, though, a big gulf between reading individual tweets and mass-collection of same for analysis.

The Telegraph notes that data sales made up 13% of Twitter’s total revenue last year.

I've been unemployed for about 2 months, and today is my first day at a new job.

And it just feels so weird.

In my mind, I think, "Today will be fun! Meet some new people, check things out, learn something."

Then, I realize I'll also be there tomorrow. And the next day. And most days after that.

And periodically they will also send me money.

And, while my new job is pretty cool, I'm mourning all of the time I'm about to lose.

I've never felt quite so mixed about starting a new role before.

If you're mad about Google's self-destructive emails, start using a different email provider! ProtonMail is a good one, as an example.

Even better: take it one step further by setting up your own private email server at home for maximum decentralization.

I love that this is actually a discussion in Canada - and poverty isn't so extreme that this is out of reach.

We now have a better handle on how much it would cost, based on a concrete proposal, with a fighting chance of being implemented. It’s a start
