Met my 7th graders for the first time today. They seem like a good class, nice and small, and I kept their attention pretty well.

Got into an elevator at my work today. It was empty, but the previous occupant had farted. Let's just say the situation was...suboptimal.

I'm really rather annoyed by people (translate: privileged whiny men) who think that feminism is about opening doors and paying dinner checks.

The expression appears (as I recall) in the early Beverly Cleary books written in the 50s. References to it are pretty rare.

I loved the first season of American Vandal because it so perfectly lampooned the self-important, pretentious tone of "Making a Murderer," which was a horrible show that was totally cynical and manipulative. AV was actually a pretty brutal rapier right to the guts of a corrupt deception. I've only seen the first ep of the new season but I'm loving it so far.

Got a question for someone who knows language and word history. When did the expression "look at TV" get replaced by "watch TV"? People were still saying "look at" in the early 1960s. It was "watch" by late 70s. When and why did the change occur?

55 years ago this week, "The Haunting" was released. It's still one of the scariest pictures of all time and a masterpiece of horror cinema that holds up well after more than half a century. Here's my article celebrating the film:

I've finished my new "Bond in Context" video! Here is the historical story behind "The Man With the Golden Gun" from 1974, one of the weakest of the Bond pictures...involving the energy crisis, the Yom Kippur War, Watergate and kung fu movies. This one is a very odd journey!

It was a very good day. The first of the seminars I'm attending on how to become a professional speaker went very well and I learned a lot. Met some great people, interesting people!

The principal of the school where I'm teaching told me the kids were all talking about how much they liked my history class today. This is high praise from 6th graders. I feel good. Maybe this will work out. 😊
