Quite tipsy. #DLW & co. won yet another award (see #Facebook for photos). Recognised few faces in the #Coffs entrepreneurial community, The sharks are the same, but the minnows are refreshed every year by a new wave of naïve sea-changers.
I never miss an opportunity to listen to Mark Blyth, as he's an excellent frustrated stand-up comic. His macroeconomics is not so sound, but that's a minor quibble. Academic appointments should IMHO give at least as much weight to one's skill as a raconteur.

Matthew DavidsonAh. "Theories" that don't yield hypotheses, and the "theorists" who produce them are labeled as such because the words "philosophy" and "philosopher" can't be used by anybody who wants to hold down a job in neoliberal academia. As everybody of consequence from Karl Popper to Stephen Hawking have testified, #philosophy is finished, outmoded, and irrelevant. On the bright side, I expect this has had the salutary effect of purging carpetbaggers from the few schools of philosophy remaining.

Matthew DavidsonGood Lord, I had no idea that there was still a viable breeding population of Presbyterians. I was baptised as such despite neither of my parents belonging to that sect, nor having anything but the woolliest of religious beliefs. In the absence of non-Christian immigrants, the sinister enemy within of 1971 #AU was Catholics, so perhaps they thought I would serve on the militant front lines of this clash of barely distinguishable civilisations. I dearly hope that Paisley Jr. has inherited the familial stentorian timbre that will continue to pay the bills for satirical impersonators through the many scandals to come. http://microblog.mjd.id.au/url/14714
… of monstrous proportions. Cringely's book (https://www.cringely.com/tag/accidental-empires/) depicts a sadistic workplace manipulator. Met an American IT consultant in the late 90s who knew someone who had worked with him and was utterly devastated by the experience. I wonder (uncharitably) if without advance notice of his demise and consequent opportunity to position himself for tech sainthood he would be so well remembered.

Matthew DavidsonThey have this weird tradition at work. Once a week, there will be a table in the corridor with a pot of oil on a hotplate and a plate of vegetables, seafood, chicken, and assorted pastry parcels. As you go by it, you're supposed to pop something into the pot for the next person who passes to fish out and eat. It's called "casual fry day".
