I love the hyper-modularity of Mastodon/Fediverse. It's hard to get started but everything is still young and malleable.

I've heard a lot of people complain that there will never be another technology like email, because you couldn't ensure wide adoption without centralization. Mastodon is a great counter-example.

@mcc Tootdon has an instance search feature that I think addresses some of your requests. You can even star and boost toots directly, and follow new people.

@catonano speaking of clojure, and compiling one thing into another:

    https://github.com/nakkaya/ferret

Ferret is a free software lisp implementation designed to be used in real time embedded control systems. Ferret lisp compiles down to self contained C++11.

The coolest thing is that the source of the whole system is a single Org mode file. So the manual *is* the source code in true literal programming style.

    Found on http://planet.emacsen.org

    #clojure #emacs #orgmode

    4. Instance admins can specify what other instances they can federate to/from. For example, this instance blocks images from the largest Japanese instance (https://pawoo.net/) due to concerns about the content https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/2657448
    5. The hyper-modular nature of all this is super-interesting. As one example, I mostly use the Tootdon app to interact here but that is a completely separate project.

@dpaola2 I was never promised simplicity - where was that?

Federation is important because this is such a messed up experiment.

    1. Mastodon (the software) is an implementation of the ActivityPub protocol. https://activitypub.rocks/
    2. Mastodon.social (this site) is an instance (server) running the Mastodon software.
    3. The Fediverse is the colloquial name for the microblogging network that emerges from instances of compatible implementations of ActivityPub https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

@dpaola2 I'd guess the lack of content from your follows is giving you an empty Home timeline.

The "Local" timeline is everything from users on your server (referred to as an instance), so that can be good for discovery (but not really on larger instances like this one).

Did you know that you don't need to use link shorteners (bit.ly, etc.) on Mastodon? All links, no matter how long, only count for 23 characters against your 500 limit!

(And since link shorteners are bad for user experience and break the web, there's almost no good reason to use 'em! 😄)

For everyone asking for Quote toots in Mastodon -- it's deliberately not been implemented:

    https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/07/cage-the-mastodon/

(also there's lots of design decisions that seek to try and limit potential abusive behaviour)

I would like to announce a public server running #brutaldon: https://brutaldon.online/

Brutaldon is a brutalist, Web 1.0 web interface for Mastodon. You can use it as a client for any instance. Currently you do not need a separate brutaldon account. It is compatible with almost any web browser, including text-mode browsers like lynx, w3m, or eww.

Screenshots, issues tracker, and source code are available at https://github.com/jfmcbrayer/brutaldon.

    Have fun!

I just self-retooted a reply that I thought I'd like to share more widely. If it doest what I expect then that might be better than quote-tooting?

I know @Gargron is against quote-tooting but would be good to know whether this behaviour is expected?

@hq This...actually would not be crazy expensive?

Assuming starting with ingesting 100k toots per day, each toot 1k size on average, 1% daily growth rate and streaming inserts, the cost of storage for the first year is like $25.75?

That gives a total of 0.37TB of data so querying would be moderately expensive but that could be optimized later. Hit me with some corrections and I'll Solver them into the sheet.
