The words "magically" appear as my fingers move across the keys. When I finally tap the "Toot!" button, I may have accumulated 500 characters, a message long enough to be expressive, though that's my responsibility.
All this possible because of the work of thousands who have made my computer and the Internet seem simple, right down to @Gargron who felt this federation needed a columnar tweak.
I appreciate it every day, but gratitude seems specially appropriate on Sundays.

I have some thoughts on the Mastodon and Pleroma "rivalry", please bear with me.
Obviously we'd expect me to be biased for Mastodon. This thread isn't going to be about that. It's not about which is better.
Rather, what I want us to think about here is the opportunity for healthy rivalry. It doesn't have to be toxic.
In a healthy rivalry we can spur each other on to be better.
At the same time, I hope we'll be able to fulfill different niches in this federated market.

He asked his dad how to write games. His dad didn't know. His dad asked me how to write games on an iPad. I told him not to bother.
My nephew asked me how to learn to write games.
I gave him a raspberry pi and a copy of pico 8.
Now he writes computer games.
He couldn't do that on his iPad.

A safe option is, then, to get a CD/DVD "live" Ubuntu disc.
With it, you can run a working copy in RAM with **no impact** on your Windows hard drive.
Nothing is permanently installed, but you can begin exploring your "Linux side".
The next time you start your computer with the DVD out, it goes to the Windows environment you now have.
