@ItsJenNotGabby They’ve been pretty hard on these white dudes when it comes to sentencing. Manafort’s going to spend the rest of his gout-y life in prison at this point, and the only ones getting off the hook are the ones who flip, which Stone may not... though none of these people seem to have anything approaching loyalty. And the full charges are pretty damning, particularly RE: witness tampering. He threatened someone repeatedly with death.
@ItsJenNotGabby Obstruction of justice and witness tampering will definitely end up with more than a fine— federal witness tampering is potentially 20 years per count, depending on the severity, and he’s done it a lot. And if he really *won’t* flip, which he’s said that he won’t publicly a bunch of times, then he could spend the rest of his rotten life in jail.
Woohoo, they got Roger Stone! That was the one I’ve been holding out for through all of this, was to see that smug fucking puppet master get his ass handed to him.
These evil white men make it really hard to be a total prison abolitionist, but you know, fine, that top hat wearing motherfucker can be free, too, ONLY as long as everyone else is.
@TheGibson I read these stories of government workers on Splinter, and what stands in such stark relief to me is how capitalism and the republican austerity program of the last 38 years (THANKS, REGAN), have made it so that people who used to have the kind of jobs that guaranteed savings and support, even if they couldn’t work, no longer have that.
@erosdiscordia Yeah, I mean, choosing to work for the government usually means you’re down for bureaucracy and bow to authority basically by definition.
@erosdiscordia Oh, yes, and I did (they ask on the form), but from what I understand from news stories, people aren’t answering phones if you have a question, so...
Luckily, we’re not traveling until May, so we have some time, but who effing knows with this intransigent bozo throwing his temper tantrum?
Actually, I want to point out that even though I don’t work for the government, I have been personally, if comparatively trivially, effected by the shutdown.
1. Despite finally paying 2017’s no medical insurance fee in full in Dec, a hefty chunk of money taken out of my bank account, I am still receiving invoices from the IRS with automatically accumulated interest.
2. I just sent off my passport to be renewed (inşala/maşala🤞🏽), with no idea if it will be processed.
@sciss Had to dig DEEP into Wikipedia to get some conflicting, nebulous rebuttal that Guaidó and his party are actually not really right wing, unless you consider Stalinism extreme left and everything less oppressive “right” of that. 🤦🏼♀️
@sciss Thank you for this, btw. I’ve been searching all morning for someone to have an actual breakdown on this that made sense— every American mainstream news site calls Maduro a leftist and socialist (or far left) and then talks about corruption, dictatorship, etc., and then says that Guaidó is “the opposition” and I couldn’t find what his actual stances are, so I assumed fascist.
goddammit, seems like the far-left is doing another episode of "let's disappoint the heck out of everyone else by inventing conspiracy theories in order to justify an incompetent authoritarian ruler"...
And to those who are screaming around about an "imminent US invasion". Just LOL. Look, this is _not about gringoland_, it's a about Venezuela and the Venezuelan people. It's also not about oil, this is not the Iraq war. USA is fracking the hell out of their own country right now. Just for once understand that this is not about the orange clown or Mike fucking Pence. It's about Venezuela. Repeat that 61 times.
look, bosses either need to give workers a fucking raise, or get of the way so people can collectivize.
if anything, bosses should get out of the way period, but because (f)oss is a total shitshow that prioritizes bosses, on both funded and unfunded projects, libertarianism abounds.
tech has always been like this. anti-union, pro-boss, anti-worker. this is nothing new.
I’ve seen some rumblings about a general strike among essential workers who are having to work without pay, and my question is, “How are we a month in and only NOW you are thinking this?”
STRIKE. Get out in the streets. A hundred or so protested at the capitol yesterday. A hundred? How are we so injured to dysfunction and capitalists bleeding us that they haven’t all been in the streets since day 8? This is ludicrous.
Hey infosec people: do me a favor and assume the "use case" for anyone you don't know personally includes facing poverty, discrimination, state-sponsored oppression, corporate surveillance, domestic abuse and harassment while using your product.
