@deejoe If you want answers, you're gonna be disappointed.

This has been going on for years, obviously. I wonder if anybody ever got cremated back when they were still using radium for cancer "therapy," e.g. in Henrietta Lacks' day.

"Investigators found [Lu-177] contamination on the crematorium’s equipment, including the oven, bone crusher, and vacuum filter, with a 7.5-mR maximum exposure rate per hour…

[Upon testing] the crematory operator’s urine, they didn’t find any lutetium-177. But they did find trace amounts of technetium Tc 99m, which is a radioactive tracer … used in diagnostic tests. The operator hadn’t had any such tests, though."

Gonna start giving writing tests in technical interviews for programmers.

No more fizzbuzz or "reproduce some famous person's PhD work on the fly on a whiteboard while being stared at". Just "write the docs for this chunk of prewritten code".

If you're at all interested in the development / progress of #writeas and #WriteFreely, I'd highly recommend following @writeas_dev.

Whereas I try to keep this account low-volume and limited to the important stuff, the dev account often contains what we're working on at any given moment, as well as new issues, small fixes, and our future plans.

Even if you're not a developer but instead run a WriteFreely instance — or just publish on one — there's relevant information for you there.

moderation in Pleroma has evolved so far in less than a year.

first MRF was implemented allowing for policy-based moderation in an automatable way, now the MRF framework is expanded with user tagging and, soon, dynamic configuration!

thanks to @href for helping to coordinate maintenance of MRF, @rin and @karen for working on policy modules, @feld for coordinating work on anti-abuse tools in Pleroma at large and @hecate for working on dynamic configuration!

together, we have built the most powerful moderation system the fediverse has seen yet!

Honestly I'd kind of love to start collecting old printers like that and rehabbing them to sell inexpensively to low income ppl, but like everybody else my spoons are pretty much all directed at surviving right now

Back when I got my Laserjet it was $20 on Craigslist and still had some usable toner. I maxed out the RAM (with a 16MB SIMM!) for about $15, and dropped another $15 or so on eBay for a Jetdirect box so I can plug it in to the network.

So, about $50 invested and I got maybe 1000 pages (several years) out of the included toner. It finally ran out. $22 to replace, good for 2500 pages.

It's worth it to learn how to maintain these machines, they're well built, cheap to run, and rarely break. #diy

I ordered a new printer yesterday, and just plugged it in to the network and turned it on for the first time, then came back to my desk. I was greeted by a notification from my #Ubuntu desktop that my new printer was ready to use.

Is this ... the year? Did it happen?

So I have a Laserjet 1100 with a small plastic part inside disintegrating.

It's printed like 19,000 pages. The test page touts DOS & WfWG support. And yet the UX beats that of modern monstrosities hands down... but I digress.

Anyway I was wondering how screwed I am for replacement parts. Then I started wondering if a 3D printed PLA part would hold up, as a friend has a rig.

Assuming I can't just ebay a part, what a great use for 3D printing. Old Laserjets are worth their weight in gold.

@Mainebot @djsundog There was a monthly "magazine" on floppy disk for a while in the late 80s, I think it was called Uptime! if memory serves. I had some issues on 360KB 5.25" floppy for a while.

ANYway, now that I've gotten over my need to wave my little shrimpfork around and point out that *people were offering free labor on how to diversify the Mastodonverse months ago* ............... I just wanted to point out that all the tempests in this particular teapot are going to seem a hell of a lot less meaningful in a year or less.

I mean, have you *seen* the amount of #ActivityPub development going on right now?
