@TheLizardQueen 😀 it was very fun! I improved the whole thing because we are each picking a board game and to my surprise one of the boys picked D&D.

I had forgotten just how looooong everything is in the Lord of the Rings. Every chapter, every speech, every scene is so much longer than it needs to be for dramatic or narrative purpose; a verbosity for which the sole justification is to luxuriate in its own depth of ideas. It is grand and ridiculous and I can't imagine anything like this being published today.

And the boys are eating it up. #DadOps

The Grinch (2018) is technically brilliant, and Benny-hana Cranberrysauce gives an enjoyable performance, but the writing, pheeeew. If you're going to adapt Seuss, you need to understand meter and rhythm at least as well as Seuss, and spoiler alert, nobody understands meter and rhythm as well as Seuss.

Also Tyler the Creator's version of You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch is butt. Sorry, Mr. The Creator.

So I started the Fellowship of the Ring, not really expecting the boys to dig it yet -- I sort of assumed they would check out during the prologue. But nope, they are *way* into it, made me read extra, and then complained when I stopped. ♥️ #DadOps

@djsundog I genuinely want to shield them from the horrors of this world, and clutch them to my chest forever. But I also want to dress them in the armour of empathy and send them out to banish those horrors.

@djsundog I find Patriotism and Nationalism (and how often they are conflated) vile, which makes Thanksgiving and the 4th of July so, so difficult for me. The twins are five, and love a parade (and candy being thrown at them). My wife loves a parade.

I struggle with how much history the kids need at this age. They know we live on stolen land. They know villains are real. But they know Grandma and Grandpa and Mama want to watch the parade and have a big dinner.
